Was the $75 worth paying for to go on the grand canyon skywalk? |
Travel Info Was the $75 worth paying for to go on the grand canyon skywalk? Travel Tips I've actually been there. As a person who visits the canyon a lot (and has written about the history of it), I knew what I was getting into but felt I needed to see it first hand to judge. Of course, 'worth paying' is a subjective value and I am sure that some people thought it was great. However, I thought the whole Sky Walk is vastly over-rated even if they had only charged $25. Many of the people that were there the day that I was were very upset and felt ripped-off. The Sky Walk is not the way it appears on 'artist renditions'... it is not over the river on the main gorge (it is up a side canyon - you only see a little bit of the river off in the distance) and it is not a 4000 foot drop below the Sky Walk (probably less than a thousand before the cliff expands outward in ledges and slopes). More over, much of the view through the floor is blocked by the large support beams. It is a little bit freaky to be walking over a glass floor when you first go on it, but all you really see looking straight down is a pile of rocks against the cliff face - not that exciting. You certainly don't get any better understanding or perspective on the canyon as a whole. The view looking out over the railing of the Sky Walk is impressive, but not really any different from standing on the rim 50 feet away. By the way, you are not allowed to take cameras on the Sky Walk - they say it is for safety, but I don't think they want photos getting out to show what the view through the floor really looks like. I sympathize with the Hualapai reservation trying to improve their lot - they have a lot of poverty and can't run a casino because they are too close to Las Vegas. With all the money being made on outdoor recreation in the southwest, I understand them trying to leverage their beautiful landscape, but I wish (for their sake) that they find approaches that are more tasteful and less cheap-thrill hype that the Sky Walk tourist trap - this bitter taste this 'attraction' leaves in many people's mouths may end up backfiring on them in the long run. Source(s): Arizona resident and frequent Grand Canyon visitor and hiker. Have been to both rims (and the bottom) many times. Other Travel Tips I have always highly recommend that people spend two days or more actually seeing and viewing the gorgeous and scenic Grand Canyon! However, anyone who foolishly pays $75 to see such a small portion is both dumb and naive! A total waste and a rip off regardless of how much it cost to build! I am confident that $25 would have been plenty and I will not waste even one red cent on this tourist trap!! Been to most areas of the Grand Canyon 3X! I agree. They couldn't build a casino so they erected that eyesore. Personally, I hope a huge gust of wind sends the ugly thing crashing to the bottom of the canyon (with no one on it of course) and that they have to pay more to clean up the mess than they did to build it! I was able to walk on it for free a week before it opened to the public. I thought it was pretty interesting despite the nasty reviews to the contrary. Critics can stick their negativity where the sun doesn't shine. I dont know. Maybe. I doubt if it was me I would. Id just drive by and take off save my 75 bucks. |
