Travel Tips
I live in Surprise, which is about 5-7 miles from Luke. This is considered the West side of Phoenix and an area that's booming. Since Luke is between Surprise and the Goodyear/Avondale area, you'll have a lot to choose from regarding housing (if you're not in base housing). There are a lot of grocery stores, schools, restaurants all within a short driving distance. The Surprise area has a small baseball stadium where you can catch Spring Training games and housing is less expensive than most other areas. Goodyear has more expensive homes, but some really beautiful ones and there's some great shopping and restaurants in that area. There's a zoo located pretty near Luke. Westgate- an upscale shopping center houses some fine restaurants and the Coyotes Hockey arena and Cardinals Stadium are right next door.Central phoenix is accessable by the pretty direct freeway system and the streets are laid out like a grid- very easy to follow. There's lots to do in Phoenix- theater, sports, nightlife, ect.

The bad? It's hot! And traffic is a bear. The I-10 gets really congested heading east in the mornings and west in the evenings. The 101 isn't too bad yet, but even it has it's moments. Welcome to Phoenix!

I think you will enjoy Luke AFB. There will be a lot of places you can go visit. Phoenix is huge. The heat will be bad though. Even with that I enjoyed my time there. Cheers and good luck.
I bought a home around 5 miles from the base. It's not in Phoenix, but close, about 20 miles. We are only a 5 hour drive from Disneyland, Sea World, Las Vegas and Rocky Point Mexico. 4 hours from Laughlin, NV. We are only a 2 hour drive from cooler AZ locations making weekend trips an ease- Lots of lakes in Northern AZ and several lakes within an hour. One lake, Lake Pleasant , is only 30-40 minutes from the base. It's only really hot in the summer months (May-September =0), yes that's 5 months of the year!!
It is a quiet, safe, friendly neighborhood and you should like it a lot.
I live in surprise, which is a few minutes from luke AFB... but i pass by it every day to go to school. Its ok... not great, but not bad. about 10-15 min from avondale... closest stores like best buys, target, walmart, etc. and the nearest malls are desert sky (25 min) or arrowhead- much better than desert sky (40 min). but the necessities are nearby.
I was recently at the Luke Air Force Base for an air show. Walking through the grounds to the show, I didn't think the apartments to live in looked that nice, it was all very drab, but I suppose that's how they all are. I also don't like the area nearby the base very much, but the Glendale arena, Cardinal stadium and new shopping centers are near as well as a few nice housing developments. In the fall there is a huge haunted house complex to visit. Chandler, Tempe and Scottsdale are all fabulous and not terribly far away. If you don't mind the hot sun (nice winters, sprin and fall, summer isn't that bad you get used to it) then you'll love the weather.
