Travel Info Where is the ghost town of "Ryan" located? I know it is near Jacob's Lake. Perhaps you can be more specific? Travel Tips Ryan was a mining town; its original name was Coconino, but was changed to Ryan after the main owner From the extensive ruins, the mine was quite productive, but only for a short time. It had a post office, but it was in operation for less than six months in 1902, an indication that the copper available for extraction was probably not as large as originally thought. Here's a link to more info: http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/az/ryan... Others Did it occur to you to ask the local folks when you were up there? I found Ryan's location pretty easily by doing a Google search. It's about 8 miles west of Jacobs Lake and accessed by gravel forest roads. You're probably not going to find it just going up there and poking around or expecting to see a sign...you need a map. I recommend the official Coconino National Forest map. National Forest maps are great as all the backroads are clearly labeled and the symbols give a pretty good idea of road conditions. As it is, it looks like the most direct route to Ryan may not have the best road conditions...again, that's why it's always a good idea to inquire locally. It also looks like unless you have high clearance or 4-wheel drive, you'll be walking the last 1/4 mile or so. |
