What are some fun things to do in Flagstaff AZ?

Travel Tips
Flagstaff is a great town with a heavy emphasis on tourism and recreation.
The town was started a lumber and railroad town and later became a major stop on Route 66. The high elevation (7000 feet) makes it a cool escape from desert heat during the summer.

The old downtown area has many great historic buildings from the early 1900s that have been restored into neat little cafes, shops and art galleries. Of particular interest is the wonderful old railroad depot, the city hall, Weatherford hotel, Babbits Merchantile and the Monte Vista hotel (where scenes from the movie Casablanca were filmed). Good places to eat downtown include Beaver Street Brewery (south of the Depot), Kathy's Cafe and Macy's Coffee Shop. Other good resturants (along South Milton near NAU) include Oregano's Pizza, Bun Hugger burgers, and Crystal Creek Sandwich shop.

On the hill overlooking downtown is Lowell Observatory which was founded in the 1890s to study Mars and was the place where Pluto was discovered in 1930. It is still a working observatory and has a nice visitor center. On the northern edge of town is the excellent Museum of Northern Arizona which specializes in Native American history and art. In the same area, is the Pioneer Historical Museum (Flagstaff area history) and Art Barn (large co-op art gallery).

Northern Arizona University (NAU) is along South Milton on the southern edge of town and frequently has festivals, special events, etc.

Here are some other attractions getting a bit further outside of town:
Walnut Canyon National Monument (east of town) - Prehistoric cliff dwellings in a beautiful canyon.

Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments (NE of town along 89A) - This is a combination extinct volcanic field (cinder cones and lava flows) and a nearby prehistoric pueblo ruin - both are very interesting.

San Francisco Peaks and Mount Elden - The peaks are the tallest point in Arizona. There is a ski resort that also offer chair lift rides in summer (for the views). Both the peaks and nearby Mount Elden have excellent hiking trails.

Grand Canyon National Park South Rim - About 90 miles North of Flagstaff.

Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona - Starts about 30 miles south of Flagstaff on 89A. Sedona and Oak Creek are famous for the red rocks, trendy shops and resorts and nice hiking areas.

Meteor Crater (about an hour east of Flagstaff, near Winslow) - Meteor impact crater. A bit pricy and you are only allowed to stand on the rim. I prefer the historic La Posada railroad hotel in nearby Winslow (it is a neat place and has an excellent restuarant).

Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Parks (about 90 miles east of Flagstaff) - The Petrified Forest in particular is pretty impressive. Source(s): Arizona resident. Grew up in Flagstaff and still visit frequently

i believe the meteor crater is in flagstaff, or if not, just a short driv.e I've been there, it's really pretty. You can always play in the snow when it's snowing. :) Or, if you're up for just a bit of driving, the magnificient Grand Canyon is just a few hours away from Flagstaff!

or, when all else fails, get a nice hotel room and jump on the beds. that's always fun. :
not a whole lot to do in flag.
slide rock is fun and beautiful and sedona a great place to camp me and my family go once a year there not in flagstaff but like 5 -10 minutes away
