I have lived many places including mesa more than once. As for the comments in the other answers.
Noisy- Yes it's a small city not a town with one stop light (Tonto basin).
Full of Mormons - It does have a large mornom community, but they no longer control the town. Mesa has become a very culturally diverse community.
Does it have crime - Yes there are hot spots of crime in very specific areas. Mesa is huge area wise so you can pick your environment.
really square - Not so much square as boring. It lacks night life. They have tried to liven it up by building an performing arts center. But there are very few night spots. It's basically a bedroom community. There is no youth culture.
The community has a fairly conservative tilt. That is one of the problems. But the ethnic diversity keeps it from being a total tupper ware waste land.
The answer is it a good place to live depends on how old you are. My take is something like this.
0-10years -- great
11-17years -- OK
18 - 28years -- better off dead
29-40years -- OK you can always go party in the city
40 - 55years -- good golfing
56 - 75years -- ok to much traffic
76 - 90years -- good seniors activities Source(s): Been there done that

i have never lived there but i live between there and payson in a town called tonto basin. i go to mesa alot and visit friends i hate it and i would never move there. it is hot, noisy, and everyone gets robbed
It's a big suburb of Phoenix and it's really full of Mormons.

So it's like a place full of soccer moms. Think of the TV show happy days, only it's full of Mormons, and Mr. C is having an illicit affair that nobody talks about with the Fonz.

Its hot. really hot. There are not very good schools in the mesa school district. but if you move to the right place you only have to pay mesa taxes and get a gilbert school. thats what my family does. There is alot of crime here though.....yeah its pretty boring here
Not good. I live in Scottsdale (about 30 minutes from Mesa). There is more crime there than than other parts of the Metro area, schools are kind of mediocre, and for some reason seem more hot there and smoggier.
