Places to visit in Poland? |
Travel Info I am travelling to Poland on Sunday for a few days and the only two things we have planned are to visit Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Can anybody recommend other places to visit to make the trip worthwhile? We are staying in Krakow. Travel Tips Apart from Wieliczka and Auschwitz, there are some highlights in the city itself, mostly in the Old Town. In the Old Market Square there's St. Mary's church with an exquisite Medieval altar with countless figures carved in wood. In the Market's center, there is the Sukiennice Hall, originally trading in cloth (hence its name; "sukno" is Polish for "cloth"), but now selling traditional artwork and other souvenirs. The Czartoryski Museum displays the only Leonardo painting remaining in Poland, "Lady with an Ermine". When you move south of the Old Town, you reach the Wawel Royal Castle, actually consisting of two parts - the Castle proper and the Wawel Cathedral with monumental tombs of Polish kings and queens. The Castle holds a collection of huge 16th c. tapestries and a small armory plus some other displays. Below the castle, there is the Wawel Dragon Lair and the statue of the dragon - if you phone a certain (high-priced) number, the dragon will breathe fire. At the historical Jewish quarter - Kazimierz you will with stylish music and food (not always kosher, however) at local restaurants. But bagels can be found everywhere - mostly in the Old Market Square. And a walk along the Planty park would also be nice. Others there are really nice places in Poland. It is so beautiful! i recommend going to visit the castles, you can go inside and look around. It so great, its located in krakow. I hope you enjoy your stay. Also down in Zakopane you can visit Gesia Szyja, its a mountain that you hike all the way to the top. You can look down and see so much. Its free. Its amazing! Also if you go down farther in Zakopane you can see the Tatry Mountains. The Kazimierz - was the old Jewish quarter was where parts of Schindler's list were shot. Also home of the bagel. They are great from the street vendor they are kind of like a big pretzel. Also try Zubrowka its buffalo grass vodka it taste like apple jacks. They sell is everywhere. Also the Wawel castle is great and the cathedral there is where Pope John Paul began is career on the way to being Pope. I hope that helps. You should definetly spend some time in the mountains. It is amazing and breathtaking! Krakow is still nice, even though all of Western Europe have discovered Krakow and are running there in packs to destroy it. The Wieliczka Salt Mine? Definitely. Oswieciem (Polish name for Auschwitz)? ehhh...not so much. Unless you are Jewish and it means something to you. Otherwise, why bum yourself out? The city of Oswieciem itself is more than depressing...it's a real touristy thing to do...and I cannot see why anyone goes, although I have been twice. Wawel Castle? Yeah, sure. Say hi from Michalek to Smok, the dragon gaurding the castle from an invasion from the river. St. Mary's Cathedral in the town center (Rynek Glowny - pronounced Reeneck Gwoovneh)....just walking the streets around the center are a nice thing to do for a day or two. But then go to Przegorzaly...past Salwator...a neighborhood on the edge of Krakow..not too far from the castle, in fact. There is a breath-taking view of the Wisla River. Go to the top of the hill. There is chateau built by the Nazis. It has been converted to offices but downstairs is a restaurant. You can sit outside and enjoy a wonderful view. Kazimierz District? Sure, but there is really nothing fabulous about it anymore. It had charm 10 years ago, but it has developed into a real tourist trap. You should still go, but there is nothing really Jewish about it other than few restaurants and a Synagogue..oh..and a wall made of Jewish tombstones. I lived in this district. Tyniec is a nice place to visit not far outside of Krakow. Just a bus ride. There is an old monostary there and a nice view of the Wisla River, again. Ojcow, just north of Krakow is great place to visit as well, but they may be just a little too much for a few days. Old castle ruins and a cave where King Kazimierz hid out for a while..destroyed by drunken Polish guys years ago. If I can be of any help, here is my email: crapshootlose@yahoo.com My friend came from Poland so here she is: you could visit the Biawa Podlaska,Krakow is one of the best places to visit in Poland and one of the busiest places too their is a lot of traffic . have fun ...........i'm going this summer yay me .lol. ps:sorry i don't remember much i haven't been their since i was 7 and now i'm 11 Ive been there |
