Where can I get Zlotys? Only in Poland? What is best: cash machine or exchange? At the airport or in the city?

Travel Info
I'll be going on a trip to Poland and I wanted to take some Zlotys with me. I went to the bank and they said that they do not deal with that currency. So I was wondering if I can only get them in Poland, once I arrive there?
So I wanted to ask you if it is easy to get Zlotys at the Warsaw airport and
what is best, either using a cash machine to get them or exchange for euros. What would be the best deal for
a foreigneir? At the airport or in the city itself? Also do they charge comissions on either places? I mean, should I exchange all the
euros I expect to spend during the trip at once, or can excange little by
little?
I assume that to travel in the public transports in Warsaw I will need Zlotys. They do not accept euros there, do they?
Thanks a lot!

Travel Tips
You can only get Zlotys in Poland. It is up to you if you want to take cash with you and exchange it there or just use ATM. It doesn't matter where you exchange your money, sometimes in the city you will get a better deal than the airports but it's really not that big of a difference. If you bring euros or dollars to Poland with you, you don't get charged anything for exchanging it at the kantor (exchange office) so I wouldn't do it all at once, because sometimes the value goes up and you can get more money. If you use ATM, the exchange rate is going to be the same as at their banks (pretty much the same as the market), but you will get charge for the ATM fee which is like $2, give or take few cents and your bank fee (if you have one - not all banks do). Unfortunatelly, they aonly accept Zlotys, no euros, but you can also exchange that. For public transportation you need zlotys to buy tickets, and you can get them at pretty much any bus/tram/train station. Have fun! Source(s): I lived in Poland for about 15 years and I was just in Poland this past summer and I took $$ with me, when I ran out I took out money from ATM

I guess the answer depends on where you're coming from.
If you're coming from the United States you can sometimes get zlotys at an exchange booth at the airport. I've gotten zlotys at JFK.

>So I was wondering if I can only get them in Poland, once I arrive there?

yes

using cash machine is usually the best option as you get the bank exchange rate. exchange booths give you less favorable rates and sometimes charge you commission.

also, check with you bank - see if they have branches or affiliates in Poland - if you use your bank's cash machine you'll avoid paying extra fees.

>I assume that to travel in the public transports in Warsaw I will need Zlotys. They do not accept euros there, do they?

you are correct. you need zlotys.
Hi there again!
I'm afraid you'll only be able to get zlotys in Poland, as they are not very popular currency in other countries. I don't think there are cash machines that can exchange euros (or any other currency) for zlotys - we do it in "kantor" (an exchange office) or in a bank. However, in banks you'll pay more.
My advice - exchange only some money at the airport, because the exchange offices there have higher exchange rates.
And yes, you'll need zlotys for public transport. Although we are in EU, we still don't use euros (mostly in big stores).

I helped some other guy with the Polish prices, so you might want to have a look at this:

Good luck and enjoy!
The airport generally has the best exchange rate.
i got mine from Bank of America. however once you're there there are places all over. the excchange rate from the ATM's was super - i was plesantly surprised when the statements came! one thing -- have plenty of $$$ handy if you're going to Zakopane and other non-"major" cities -- most places don't take credit cards and Amex - forget it unless you're at the high end spots in Warsaw, Krakow, etc. thankfully i had two via's on me and gave one to my mom who'd only brought her amex & was somad when she couldn't shop!

oh, another tidbit i wish i'd known -- keep the single 1 zloty's handy - you need them whenever you use a restroom! okay just about everytime! I hope you make it to Wadowice - there is a little bake shop just to the right of the JP2's home church -- hhmmmmm, i miss that taste!
I would take some dollars with me and exchange in poland, not on the airport , in the city, in "kantor"- exchange. $1=around 3.12 polish zloty.l wouldn't exchange a lot, depends from your expenses.if you will need more go to ATM and withdraw some more, rates aren't so bad (check with your bank). anyway, you don't want to carrymuch money with you in poland...
