I know a bit about Seattle, but how does Portland OR differ from Seattle?

Travel Info
Is it as expensive as Seattle? Does it have a similar lifestyle, culture, weather? Are there neighborhoods I do not want to live in?
Anything you can tell me would be helpful. Thanks

A comparison of Seattle to Portland is easy to do with facts and data, I was born in Seattle, grew up in Oregon and have now been back in Seattle for about 30 years. My opinion is that Seattle is more culturally endowed, more marine, more ethnically diverse and the area as a whole is thriving. Portland does have far better transit into the city and a nice pedestrian corridor, and is more spread out. I鈥檝e included links below that you can use to compare schools, hospitals, crime, weather, etc.

The median age and marital rate in the two cities is about the same鈥攎ore married folks in Portland. The median income in Seattle is $45k as opposed to Portland鈥檚 $40k, but the house values in Seattle are about $100k more. The education level is a bit higher at the high school level and significantly higher for college degrees in Seattle than Portland.

Oregon has an income tax and Washington has an enormous sales tax on all but food (candy, pop, beer, etc. are taxed). The crime rate in both Seattle and Portland is about twice the national average crime rate. Average temperatures in Portland are similar to the national average, where Seattle is lower. Interestingly enough, the precipitation level in Seattle and Portland are about the same which is significantly lower in the summer than the national average and significantly higher in the winter than the rest of the country.

Personally, I enjoy them both and even though we love living in the Seattle area, we often travel to Portland -- sometimes just to go to Powell's City of Books. :) Source(s): http://www.city-data.com/city/seattle-wa...

Ok for Seattle. Don't live in Pioneer Square. . . Ok I was watching the news and Seattle is safe at Night and at Day so doesn't really matter. Seattle is more artsy and has more culture I believe. If you look at yahoo travel and go to the brouchures go to Seattle and Everyone. . maybe some people but most people want to live in Seattle. Here is one person: I'm moving my whole family

Great for:History/Culture, Theatre/MusicMy husband and I visited Seattle four years ago. We fell in love the people are wonderful. The whole atmosphere is romantic, energetic yet natural and easy. We have been saving, we are moving the whole family there next year. Can't wait to see you there in the Emerald City!! Hope that helps! They are both pretty much the same price though.

Seattle is more of a coastal city than Portland. Portland is on a river and Seattle is on Puget Sound which is essentially a bay directly connected to the ocean. Seattle is more comopolitan than Portland. I have lived both places and prefer Seattle. It rains but there is more blue sky than Portland which can be gray and gloomy for months at a time. Seattle feels fresher. That sounds strange, but its the only way I can describe it. Portland is more for families and Seattle more for adults.
I'm from Portland and have lived in Seattle. They are both very beautiful, with lots to do. Portland has the friendliest people of all the states I have lived, except here in Alaska. I felt safest living in S.E. area, but I haven't been back for awhile, so it could have changed, crime wise. It is so green. The Rose festival Parade is really great.
It rains more in Seattle. Portland is a smaller city, but in my opinion is more friendly. Traffic isn't as bad in Portland. Portland has a light rail system for transportation which has won national acclaim, making our overall public transportation system better than Seattle's. We also have a streetcar in the downtown area. The freeways are more congested in Seattle, but the arterial congestion is worse in Portland. Overall traffic is worse in Seattle.

Portland is very laid back. We have a clean, friendly city, and Seattle is very overcrowded. Portland boasts the largest urban park in the country, (Forest Park) as well as the smallest. We are a city of parks and gardens, with the Japanese Gardens, the Rose Gardens, riverfront parks 27 blocks of parks through the middle of downtown, and the largest classical Chinese Garden in the country.

Portland is the microbrew capital of the nation. Seattle is more famous for being the home of coffee, but we have our own brands as well. We are also wine country, with many vineyards close by in the Willamette Valley.

It is no more than an hour's drive to the beach, the mountains, the forest, or the desert from Portland. We also have a great music scene, and the largest blues festival this side of the Mississippi. We also have a great jazz festival, and the festival of the Roses. Seattle has Bumbershoot.

Portland is probably a little less expensive than Seattle, but if people keep moving here costs will go up. Both cities have neighborhoods you won't want to live in; that is true of any medium to large city. Basic lifestyle and culture are probably similar.

I was born in Seattle, but have lived in Portland since I was twelve.
