What is teaching in Eugene/Portland like?

Travel Info
The two places I've been thinking to move are Portland/Eugene (Oregon) or North Carolina. I read on a post that teaching in NC can be tough and stressful (with children being disrespectful). I know that it's hard to generalize though...But would teaching be a ton more laid back in Portland/Eugene than in NC?

Travel Tips
My wife is a teacher, and spent last year substitute teaching in the Portland area. She stated that disrespect is a huge issue in some schools, and not at all in others. Her experience was that the schools with the greatest problems were inner city, and the best behaved schools are in the suburbs. Honestly, I imagine it varys as much here as anywhere.

That said, Oregon schools are having horrible funding issues. I can't speak for North Carolina. However, I wouldn't suggest moving to either location until you have a job secured.

Others
Schools have no funding in the Eugene area. Good luck getting a teaching job here. :(
I think the kids are pretty good here (that, of course varies from school to school, depends on the age group, and depends on the kids. They aren't perfect anywhere, as you know). But it's hard to get a teaching job here in Portland. The schools are seriously underfunded. It's a great city, though. I would advise you to look for jobs here. Maybe something is available.

Good luck!
I would go for Eugene area ... it's a lot nicer environment than the portland area. Besides Eugene, their is neighboring Springfield, and lots of small towns ... Pleasant Hill, Marcola, Junction City, Elmira, Veneta, Harrisburg, Cottage Grove, Creswell, and I am sure I have left some out. Apply to all of them. Check out the various city, chamber of commerce, and school district websites.
Portland,Or. area schools suck!! Oregon education system in a shambles..if you choose to stay in the Northwest, go North and teach in Washington State. You will find a better education system..smarter kids..
