Is Portland a peaceful area where a newbie can make good friends quickly?

Travel Info
I'm from the east coast and I'm looking to live in an area where people are less reserved and more open. Is Portland just for the granola-type, or could you fit in if you're not a tree-hugger?

Travel Tips
Well, if you walk around Portland calling people granolas and tree-huggers, you may not make too many friends.

People in Portland and the surrounding areas are typically some of the nicest people I have ever met. Everyone is quick with a smile, to hold the door for you if your hands are full, to let you in during traffic, and to just be pleasant. Even the people at the DMV and Post Office are friendly!!!!

The type of people you are surrounded by varies greatly by the neighborhood. There are all kinds of neighborhoods - hippie, professional, blue collar, wealthy, low income, youth, family, artist, etc. And then you have suburbs around Portland and into southern Washington (Vancouver, Camas) and even large farm and large acreage areas just 15 minutes from those suburbs (Wilsonville, Sherwood, Ridgefield, Washougal).

Your best bet would be to take a trip to PDX and do a tour with a realtor. Explain to them the type of lifestyle that you want and the type of people you want to be surrounded by - they can take it from there and give you a feel for everything.

Portland has a ton of transplanted residents. Some East Coasters find it a little more difficult because everything is more laid back - it's not GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO and people actually say please and thank you and expect courtesies in return. But, it's completely doable! : )

Ahh, I think people in Oregon are a littler rude. No offense, but they just are.

lol I live in Texas.. You should try living here. They have really urban cities, and really rural cities, they have Amarillo where it snows, and Port Aransas where it hasn't snowed in forever. They have all the Democrats in Austin :) and all the Republicans in Waco. From Hispanic culture in San Anotnio, or China Town Houston. Everyone is friendly here too lol

anyways, back to the question.. I think like all cities, you will have the nice people, and the rude people. I think in Oregon you will find sort of blunt people, but at the same time you have open minded accepting people which is awesome. :)
Portland is not known for its singles scene, but we do have LOTS of bars and coffee shops. Portland has a LARGE number of micro-breweries, AND it's the home of Powell's bookstore. People are friendly, but a little on the closed side. Most people will be polite if you go talk to them. If you're shy, you probably won't have a good time here, but if you like to go out and talk to other people, you'll have a blast. You don't have to be a tree-hugger, but you do have to respect and put up with those hippy types.
My wife is from the East Coast and I am a Portland native. We both travel a lot. It's hard to generalize things like friendliness in areas since it is very subjective, but we have noticed a subtle difference.

In Portland (and the west coast in general), people tend to be more laid back and open minded. It is easy to make friends, but not as easy to make really good (best) friends. The east coast is just the opposite, where people have more of a tendency to have a number of really close friends and/or family, and that's about it.

And no, Portland is definitely not just for granola types.
You should look into a town called Hooterville. It is mello.
