Moving to Oregon with boyfriend, where's good, whats a good job, is it a good idea? |
Travel Info We currently live in socal. we want out of the desert and the traffic and noise. we dont want mayberry but we dont want LA. any ideas? preferably toward the southern or coastal area? What are expenses like out there? ex: living, gas, food, etc. What is the weather like during spring, summer, fall and winter? Does it really rain and is there no sun like people say? Travel Tips Wow, uhmm any idea what you are planning on doing in Oregon? that will largly impact your choices. My GF and I (at the time, now my Wife) moved to Portland, and loved it. We moved from Texas. The grey of winter did start to get to me after a while, but then spring comes and it is great. We move in April, so we got there just in time for a wonderful summer (compared to Houston's hot and humid and nasty summer). It might be a bit of a shock though to move in fall, and go from sunny socal, to grey Portland for the winter, you will wonder if it ever gets nice, but it does, and it is wonderful! There is kinda like 6 months of wonderful weather and then 6 months of overcast. Sounds harsh, but it is sort of true. Sunny days in late fall through early spring are not super common, but they do happen. Notice I said overcast, not rainy. Rainy to me, is pouring buckets of water at you. Rain in Portland is more like a mist. It is there, but most of the time it doesn't even affect you. Portlanders donot let the "rain" affect their activities and you shouldn't either. By Quantity Houston got more rain than Portland, but Portland had more "rainy" days. I know weird but true. Compared to Texas Portland was more expensive, compared to socal it wil be cheaper. Portland is a great city, and if it feels to big gor you you can live in Vancouver across the Oregon/Washington border. It is a suburb but since it is in a different state it certainly has it's own feel to it. I cannot comment on southern/coastal areas since I have only lived in Portland. but I would definantly consider Portland. Take a long weekend trip up there and have a look around... Others It rains regularly, but not all day. where are planning to move there, too, by November... i'll be reading the answers... hope you get answers from some oreganians Compared to SoCal, the housing expenses are quite a bit lower. Check out www.rmls.com if you are looking to buy. Rent-wise, $800-1,000 per month puts you in the nicer apartment communities or a house. I am talking the Portland metro area, however. The worst traffic is along I-5 near Portland but compared to the SF bay area, its nothing. Gas is $2.75/gal. right now, food and living costs are reasonable - again, compared to California. No sales tax and we don't pump our own gas (reason enough for me to live here..ha!). There are definite seasons here and no, it doesn't rain every single day. There are stretches of gray and rain and sometimes in the winter, it does seem like it may last forever but it doesn't. Spring is wonderful here, summer days can see 100-plus, fall brings some crisper cool days and winter can bring rain or snow (or unfortunately, ice storms but those are rare). The rain does keep things green and beautiful nearly year-round. I'm a California transplant since 97 and I can tell you that I've never thought of going back. |
