What neighborhood/area in Portland should I move to?

Travel Info
I'm looking for a safe, but very active part of the city. I won't have a car, so I would like to be near everything, especially a train stop. Love to be in a fun part of the city, close to great restraunts and markets, movie theaters, etc. but I'd like to rent a cute house, not an apartment. I will be attending school in September. What part of the city should I rent in?

Travel Tips
The place you described does not exsist. If you are near a Max line you get lots of crime. N.E. is out if you don't like crime, S.E. is out if you don't have a car. N.W. would be your best shot.

Lake Oswego
sellwood, used to live there years ago, still agreat place.
IMHO, Lake Oswego is not convenient if you don't have a car. Sellwood and Eastmoreland would be good options. They're both trendy with small houses to rent. They're near buslines, but not the lightrail. Another area of town, but a more expensive area, would be NW Portland. They have beautiful homes to rent and are near many bus lines. Finally, take a look at the Irvington neighborhood and NE Portland off of the light rail. Affordable, convenient to downtown, and plenty within walking distance. If you can make it to Portland before moving here, rent a car and go for a drive. Check out different neighborhoods and see what suits you.
I agree with the last poster... We lived in Irvington for the year we lived in Portland, and it was very convienent to everything we wanted/needed, and all the transportation alternatives were close.

We (wife and I) had one car while we lived there, but we hardly ever drove it. We had only 3000 miles on it after a whole year of living there. We took public transportation everyday... well if I didn't ride my bicycle, which I only did brielfy during the summer when it was nice out. The milage on our car was all from weekend trips.

Even though the train was right there it was actually more convienent for us to take the local bus. We were close enough to downtown that by the time the train reached our station it was very full... whereas the bus stop was closer to our place, and less crowded so we just found the bus easier. Also by sheer luck the same bus that we rode from our place into downtown went right by both of our offices. My office was nearly out of downtown and if I had taken the train I would have ahd a 20 block walk, or had to change onto a bus anyway...

If you work outside of downtown then you will want to look at getting a trimet map to see what routes will service your office location.

However Irvington was a bit expensive when we were, not sure what rents are going for now...

Portland is a great city you will love it, as long as you donot let the rain depress you.
Beaverton is a safe, yet active suburb city next to Portland. It is pretty active and it is rapidly expanding as well. It has great restaraunts, shopping centers, and all the above you mentioned. Not to mention the high quality education and higher education is near. The demographics of Beaverton are made up of mid to upper mid income families, while the forementioned Lake Oswego caters mostly to higher incomes (most Portland NBA players reside there). If you like the urban scene within downtown, there is the Pearl district/NW Porltand (places MTV would most likely pick for their housing if it were to film a "Real world" season here). There is a max light rail train that runs through Beaverton, and will take you straight to the heart of Portland and beyond. Overall, if you want your foot halfway in the door of a city lifestyle, Beaverton I highly recommend =D
It depends on how much space you need, and how much you can afford.
The typical 1 bedroom 1 bath 800 sq ft house will rent anywhere from (ghetto) $700 to liveable $1100 and up. Plus in the Portland area 99.9% of landlords charge a security deposit that is equal to one months rent, and pet deposits are never less than $200 PER PET.
If you like the suburban life, with strip malls, gas stations, horrible traffic and apartment compounds on every corner then go with Beaverton. If you want something more "urban" go for Portland, either SE, certain parts of NE, and NW. SW portland has a few little cool spots, but is mostly the Joneses (suburban hetero families with 2.5 kids and a dog)
