Pacific northwest and humidity? |
Travel Info People always tell me that seattle and portland aren't humid in the summer. But doesn't it rain lot in both places? And aren't both places close to the ocean (i know portland is a bit inland) So why is it not humid and muggy like it is in Florida or Louisiana? Travel Tips Yes, it's true that Portland and Seattle are not very humid in the summer. The main reason is that even though the Pacific isn't far away, the prevailing winds in the PNW during the summer months are from the north, sometimes from the east. And it actually rains LESS in the Pacific Northwest in the summer months than in most of the United States. Here in Portland I've seen 90 days pass without so much as a drop of rain falling. Winter is a different matter : - ( Others It must be the effect of la nina It's how you feel when temperature are moisture come in contact with your skin. Yes, it rains (100% humidity) a lot in the Northwest, but because the temperature is a little bit on the cool side it does'nt feel muggy compared to the other states. Summer is so NICE in the Northwest even when temps are in the 90's. Temperatures plays a great deal with moisture and vice versa, that's how storms are generated. I'm a practicing meteorologist. I'm from the Northwest and been to the Eastcoast. because it is cold temperatures and rain compared to the south in florida and texas and other states in the south, plus it rains everday in portland and seattle compared to the states in the south they do not rain everyday and they are warmer all the time so that's why you can feel the humidity here in the south compared to the northwest. |
