How is the cost of living in Portland, OR? Including the suberbs? |
Travel Info How is the cost of living in Portland, OR? Including the suberbs? Travel Tips I'm a Oregon native it is overpriced now and over rated in my opinion I finally left there about a year ago after 30+ years living there. Just expect some long rainy season wich will rain for about 9 months and sometimes in that period it will go 30 plus days of rain until you get a break or two. But I think it is over priced for what Portland really has to offer. Others try: http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliv... I moved to PDX 'burbs in early 2006 from Seattle and find it similar. PDX has no sales tax, but we pay income tax (roughly 8.5% in WA sales tax versus 9% income tax in OR). My utilities are all roughly the same (cable, heat, elect, phone). Housing is better (aka less expensive). Good quality can be had at fair prices. Stay out of Multnomah County (downtown Portland, SE and East). High taxes, lousy schools, city government that can not pull its head out of it's, well, you know where. I live here. It's getting too friggen high because of all the people moving here from California. It used to be great, now to many people and along with it tax's have gone up, housing is expensive and getting crowded.. was that harsh? Cost of Living has gone up significantly since I've moved here roughly 12 years ago. If you want decent value for housing, you almost have to go out up to 30 miles to places like St. Helens, Woodburn, Troutdale etc. Depending on where you are moving from will be the base for comparison though. If you're moving from Cali or Hawaii, it'll seem cheap. If you're moving from Idaho or the midwest it'll seem outrageous. I am not sure about Portland, but for heavens sake do not come over here to Central Oregon! Housing is outrageous! Even the tax's are outrageous for us who own... Here is a web site that is good for info on what is going on all over Portland (housing etc.) http://www.oregonlive.com/ |
