What are the quintessential aspects of downtown Portland, Oregon?

Travel Info
I will be spending one weekend in Portland, Oregon in early March, on someone else's budget from what I understand, and I want to make sure I do the town right! People on myspace were lame and wouldnt really get back to me...I have never been West of Minnesota, so I dont want to waste my time. March 8-11 is the trip...anything exciting happening that weekend? What the hell do portlanders do? What are some good restaurants, spots, diversions?! If you (you being a portlander) had only one weekend to spend in your town, what would you do???

Travel Tips
There are loads of wonderful brewpubs. You could keep busy just going to all the McMenamin's and sampling their wonderful concoctions. Many of them, like the Kennedy School (a renovated elementary school complete with Honors Bar and Detention Bar (smoking) at 33rd and Killingsworth, have theatres with second run films, as well as a great soaking pool. Five bucks and you get to sit in a beautiful tiled rectangle filled with 101 degree water while looking up at the stars.

Powell's Bookstore is a great place to hang out and there are author readings virtually every night.

The Blazers might not be playing while you're here, but you can get a sports fix at Niketown 930 Sw 6th Ave. It's fun!

The Oregon Zoo is a great place - one of the best in the country. It's set near the World Forestry Center and Forest Park, a beautiful urban hiking mecca with BIG trees. Oregon Museum of Science and Industry's Amazon Rainforest exhibit. Their regular collections are fun, too, and there's an OMNIMAX theatre and planetarium. The Portland Art Museum has a very cool Egyptian art exhibit on.

Look east at Mt. Hood and wish you had more time so you could hang out at Timberline Lodge. Look north and see Mt. St. Helens and wish you could spend a day checking it out. Look west and think about the incredible Oregon coast. Tell the people in Minnesota you have decided to stay in Portland and ask them to ship your things.

A short drive away is the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, and boy, is it scenic! And gorgeous! (sorry, can't resist the pun) Beautiful waterfalls.

Ride the Portland Aerial Tram - you'll be doing it before a bunch of Portlanders do because it's newly opened!
M-F 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM Sat 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM The Tram cabins depart every five minutes.

There are some fun theatre and music events right now, although at other times of the year there are even more good things happening. Lots of music festivals and theatre in the parks.

ComedySportz is a fast-paced, family-friendly improvisational comedy show. It's played like a sport with two teams battling for laughs and points as they make up scenes and songs on the spot. The audience makes all the suggestions and votes for the winners, and the referee calls the fouls.

Act a Lady - Portland Center Stage
When the men of a small, Prohibition-era, Midwestern town decide to cast themselves in a period melodrama dressed in "fancy-type, women-type" costumes, gender lines blur, identities explode, alter egos assert themselves and life and art meld into a dizzyingly hilarious farce that suggests people are much more than the sum of their backgrounds, belief systems and biologies.
Pick up a Willamette Week and check out dining and other options. Have fun! Source(s): http://www.travelportland.com/event_cale...
