I want to move to Oregon,,,,,, could anyone give me first hand info on life there????

Travel Tips
I am from Eugene, OR, born and raised. I lived in California for 3 years for school, and unfortunately just had to move to Illinois (but hope to move back to the west coast in a few years).

If you are outdoorsy, you will LOVE Oregon. I am not at all an outdoors sort of person, and I love it! Yes, it can get wet, but Seattle gets much more rain. I've heard Oregon called "God's Country" by many people - not a single one of them from Oregon.

Eugene is a very liberal town - there are quite a few hippie-type people here, which can be wonderful or a bad thing depending upon your point of view. The coast is one hour away. The University of Oregon is located in Eugene, and there is a small symphony as well. The people here are pretty laid back, and it's a pretty safe community. Track/walking/biking is VERY big here - Eugene is known as "track town USA", and the city has more miles of bike paths than any city in the country (or at least it once did).

I don't know as much about Portland - I was born there, but don't get up there very often. The city itself is a bit over half a million in population, though the metro area is over 2 million. Public transportation is very good - in addition to buses, they have the MAX which is a light-rail system that serves Portland and the outlying areas. There's several concert venues in town, the Oregon Symphony is based there, Portland Opera, and the University of Portland and Portland State are in the city as well as a few other small colleges. One big attraction - for book lovers, at least - is Powell's Books, the largest independent bookseller in the world, whose flagship store occupies an entire city block.

Vancouver is just over the river in Washington, and Seattle is about 3 hours away, too.

Work can be hard to find depending upon what kind of work you're looking for. If you take a look at the Oregon Employment Department's website, you can see what kind of offerings are available at the moment in different industries and in different cities.

Good luck! :) Source(s): *Oregon Employment Department job search: http://www.emp.state.or.us/jobs/...

Other Travel Tips
It's rainy, cold, depressing, and a lot of weird tree-huggers...Not my style...
Oregon is a big state. It depends on what part you're going to move to. Portland has a nice downtown area but most things are shut down by midnight on the weekends.

Summer has some beautiful weather. It can be cold and damp in the winter though. You just have to learn to ignore it and go do stuff anyway.

That's my 2 cents worth.
Oregon is depressing it rains all the time and the economy is depressing and the price of living and homes are overpriced. I am a native Oregonian that left about a year ago. Otherwise Portland is not a big city with not much to do. There is only a couple things I do miss and that is the public transportation you basically don't need a car to get around cause there is busses and the max everywhere and then I miss the hills and mountains. Otherwise I now live in Houston Texas wich is alot bigger city and state then Portland Oregon and I have no regrets of leaving my native state and home town of Beaverton.
We just moved here ( Portland area ) about 4 months ago from Central California.........and LOVE it !!!! It is very green and hilly, tons of things to do and see. People are very nice and polite, it's pretty liberal.....and just about anything goes. The shopping is awesome (no sales tax either), ocean and mountains are about an hour away, mass transit rocks, greenbelts and parks everywhere. Lots of galleries, opera, concerts, ballet etc. Also, they love their beer, organic foods, farmers markets and dogs everywhere !!!! So, whatever it is you are looking for, it's here. And for the rain....so what !......it keeps things green and the dust down ! I'd say.........go try it.....you can always move again. Good luck !!!!
Been there, done that !
