Why do people say to stay away from North and NE Portland yet have nothing but love for Hawthorne? |
Travel Info I went to portlandmaps.com and looked up certain areas of each locale. The St. Johns area, MLK/NE Killingsworth and SE39th/SE Belmont...The statistics show that SE has just as much crime as the North and inner NE. In fact, larceny and vandalism is almost double in the Hawthorne area. More assault in North and more drugs in NE. With all things being relative, and since crime happens in every city in every state, what is it about the North and inner NE that people are so down on? If North and inner NE are on the come up and have similar crime to the highly regarded Hawthorne, why are people negative towards them? My wife and I plan on relocating soon and the more information we have on North, Inner NE and Inner SE the better. (and no, we shouldn't try the Pearl, or Goose Hollow, or NW...we are first time home buyers and want a small bungalow type home. Maybe not as cool, hip and trendy for some, but just right for us). Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you. Travel Tips NOt all of NE is bad, it has some areas with beautiful old homes and pristine yards. North Portland however is as bas as people say. It has been a long time fact it is infested with drugs, gangs and all the crap you want to stay aways from....Thats just how it is. SE has good and bad as well. NWAlong with it comes attitude wich makes me smile because Im from here and out of staters move in like they own the place....but I digress..It's become "cool " to live in the Pacific NW. Take some time come for a visit and check it out yourself....good luck to you. Others It goes back decades when NE Portland was considered a crime infested area. Since then it has been cleaned up a lot. I agree that SE Portland experiences far more crimes than NE, especially the area just north of foster. Like all area of Portland there will always be pockets of a neighborhood that's not desired because of crime. When in doubt drive around on a weekend evening to check out the areas night life and people. *A friend of mine bought a house in an area he thought was "oh so safe" the realtor showed him the house several times and he never saw anything that would raise an issue. Upon moving in he learned that the area was embedded with crackheads that came out after dark. Drive around alot and check out all listings, you may find the diamond in the ruff as many nice areas are hidden between busy intersections and streets :) Dude,it doesn't matter where you live theres gonna be crime.I'm an Oregonian(now residing in Elmira Heights,New York, hate it here!)but try having your wife and one of her girlfriends walk N.E.,Portland together (during the day only!)and you'll see why it's not safe.Try having her and a friend walk M.L.K. (hopefully you've got good insurance, lol)and see what happens.I LOVE Oregon but the drugs and crime in N.E. and M.L.K. is bad and not everythings reported. If you like having bars on your windows, security alarms, weapons, video cameras around your propertyguard dogs, drug dealers, crack heads, syringes, etc then this is the neighborhood for you, lol.Avoid this area dude.I'm not the best on all the neighborhoods but you could do better. You need to think about when you've got kids(or if,i don't no your choices)what areas and schools are good for them. The last place i lived on Oregon was Beaverton and i had a older home(i was renting)and it was great!Theirs losts of neighborhoods in Beaverton, but my home was beautiful. From my home in the summer i'd go outside in my yard and listen to the "Bite of Beaverton"i didn't even have to pay, lol.Close to Portland with a smaller community feeling. The farmers market was 2 blocks away in the summer.Good shopping(Portlands the best for shopping)nice resterants(spelling)clubs,jobs... no matter what you choose its like anything else in life, personal choice.Hope you guys enjoy getting your home and find a nice place!:) A lost Oregonian in the Worst place on earth Elmira Heights,New York(or as i call it,"hellmira heights") Don't worry, NE Portland is almost completely gentrified, just like the SouthEast! Pretty soon you won't be able to find a house for less than 300,000 ANYWHERE in the city. People hate the N, NE because that is where all the poor people have been forced to live. Its either that or 16 people to a house in the grand ole SE. God bless the ruling class of our dear "progressive" little hippy town! PS North portland = poor/ minorities = "crime". Don't worry though, the SE can't hold the Californians and trust fund babies for long and they are buying out the N NE neighborhoods at a fast pace, converting them into "safe" little spiffy arms of capitalist yuppydom. I think you should go to the St Johns area. They still have some pockets of afforadable homes plus the community is growing in the right direction. You listed the Hawthorne are so you probably woulndt be into my choice of a small small suburb like Forest Grove, Boring etc...All places have their issues. |
