Are there any natural disaters to worry about, in Oregon? |
Travel Info Are there any natural disaters to worry about, in Oregon? Travel Tips Yes there are many and it depends on the exact area of the state. Oregon is not a small state by geographic area and it has a variety of terraines. The coastal areas are subjected to floods and potential tidal waves. The mountain ranges are subjected to snow storms and avalanches. The vast forested areas are subjected to fires. The western part of the states boders on the "ring of fire" and is subjected to earthquakes. Last but not least, Mt. Saint Helens is just 60 mile away to the north east and is active once again. Others There can be a natural disaster in any state or country in the world. Not to worry, worry changes nothing and its pretty much a waste of time. The entire West Coast of the US is earthquake country, so that's a risk (ring of fire) The Pacific coast is subject to tsunamis (Tidal Waves) If you are up in the mountains, avalanches can be a risk. Flooding might be a problem in some areas. Not too many hurricanes, or cyclones though. yes, earthquake. there hasn't been one in a long time...but you know what they say, the "big one" is around the corner... Overall, Oregon is a pretty safe place in compairing it to others. Having lived here for over40 yrs., my concern is mold on my webbed feet. Yes, all lot of rain, but the many rivers and streams make up for it. Sunny days days in Oregon really should be holidays. Swimming, fishing, and all water fun in the summer makes up for it. Skiing, both snow and water, makes up the rest. The greatest concern for a disaster here, is rust! Oregonians don't tan,WE RUST! I love it, and feel very safe here. I've lived in Portland, Oregon all my life. Up here in the Tri-County area, yes, there's technically a risk of earthquakes, but i can only remember one and it damaged a total of like three houses. The primary danger around here is flooding, which we get every ten/twenty years. Most of the west hills are ok, but some of the lower lying areas can get hit pretty bad. Outside of the major cities, i think it's safe to say... theoretical tsunami danger on the coast (Although I don't remember that ever happening), and wildfires in some of the more rural areas, which we get during the non-rainy season (Summer).
