Travel Tips "Popular" (large gay community) and objectively "better" (no legal discrimination) are not necessarily the same thing. Miami is very popular with gays because of the warm climate and beach culture. But politically, it is very right-wing and Latin machismo is prevalent. In terms of popularity, other major U.S. cities attract more gays than Portland. They include: Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, New York, and Boston. There are only a couple of gay bars and clubs in Portland. It should be noted, however, that straights complain about the lack of entertainment in Portland too. So, it's not an issue of prejudice. Discrimination against gays in Portland is rare. And more legal protections are coming. With the Democrats now in charge of Oregon (since the 2006 mid-term elections), domestic partnerships and anti-discrimination legislation will almost certainly become law by the end of the year. Others San Francisco or New York Ha, Portland? No dude. I'm not gay, but I did live in Portland and it's a pretty hetero city. You might like San Francisco, Houston, or Providence, maybe even Boston. All those cities have way higher gay populations. On the other hand Portland is a very nice city to live in and with little fear of discrimination. But if you want loads of gay people to play with try the other cities. I would imagine that it's San Francisco yup.....we love gays. but if you want to know my honest opinion...portland is so homogenious that it's almost like they read a magazine article that told them to be "cool with gays"....and so they did. at the same time...yes the city is very accepting. i believe there's only one gay club here. Portland is pretty much is the mecca for everyone trying to escape their current homestate. we're a friendly place :) My son, who is gay, lives in Oakland in a victorian they're restoring and he is quite happy with that area and San Francisco, also Palm Springs is quite active for gays and he and his friends visit there often. I have never heard Portland mentioned as a hot spot by any gays, but then I've never heard it mentioned as a hot spot by anyone. |
