I'm thinking about moving to Oregon and wanted to ask residents or travelers what you like / dislike about it. |
Travel Info I'm specifically thinking about the Portland area, or a nearby town. I am 21 and am hoping to move in a year and a half when I graduate college. Is it safe, fun, good weather, geographically good, etc? Any info will help! Thanks so much. Travel Tips I have lived in Portland, and currently live in the Eugene/Springfield area. Portland is a city full of interesting sights and people. There are four distinct areas in Ptld, and it is how the streets are recognized,as well. There is NE,NW,SE,SW. NE Ptld is an older part of the city. Some areas have gang problems, some are just old and funky. NW Ptld is full of unique, interesting people. They are anything from hippie, to university deans. The lower Burnside area has long been known for it's homeless residents, and panhandlers hanging out. SE is moderate to low income folks, for the most part. Inner SE is industry, while further out, there are typical neighborhoods. For fun, there is something to do around every corner, depending on your likes and dislikes. The Sellwood area, in the SE section is loaded with antique stores, and little places to stop for coffee, NW has that element as well. Ptld is a fun place to live, a bit much for rain, but if you enjoy an array of weather changes, wind in the Gorge, icy winters at times, you'll see it all here. Outlying cities are great places, as well. The Beaverton/Hillsboro area is very nice, with rural areas still hanging in there. Lake Oswego area is expensive, and well maintained neighborhoods. Beav/Hilss is west of Ptld, Lake Osw, is south. To the east is Troutdale, Happy Valley. Both areas are growing, very nice places to live. Troutdale is the gateway to the Gorge, it gets some of the winds, and may tend to be more iced up, in winters. Vancouver, Wa is just across the Columia River. Nice city, with typical neighborhoods, and shopping centers. Living in the Ptld area, you have access to the coast, an hour or so west, east you get Mt. Hood and all the beauty you could imagine. South is the Willamette Valley, and lots of wineries. North, you cross into Wa, at the Columbia River. I live on the McKenzie River. We have as much rain, but we have more sunny days. It is quite beautiful here, employment is either during the "season", for white water rafting guides, restaurant and cabins keepers. Additional employment in town, Eugene/Springfield. The Oregon Ducks are proudly cheered on here. I hope you enjoy whatever life brings your way. The excitement of a move, has always appealed to me. I've lived in several states, but Oregon is the only state I've lived in more than one area of the state. I have found "home" here. Good luck, enjoy! Others when u rreach you will see I dont live in Portland but go often. I live in Hood River just about 60 miles from Portland. I dont really like Portland because of all the bad things that happen. Like my aunt had like 3 cars stolen and there are alot of weird people there. I would suggest Hood River. It is a wonderful cool place to live and there are a bunch of tourist attractions. During the Summer thousands of tourists come to winsurf, ride the Mt. Hood Railroad train, and check out the cool shops downtown. Alot of the people are really nice. I suggest you move here. The best thing about Portland is that you really can do everything as a pedestrian - Portland has an excellent rail transit system and the downtown is compact, exciting, clean, cute, and full of people. It's where everyone goes to shop, party, and hang out. It's very safe, the people are laid-back, and the surrounding natural areas provide endless day-trip opportunities (the northern Oregon Coast is the most spectacular in America, the Columbia Gorge is beautiful, and the Cascade Mountains are awe-inspiring). I like the weather but some people don't - it's like a light misty rain most of the time (if you don't wear glasses you won't need an umbrella), light snow once or twice a year. Summers can get into the 90's but only for a couple weeks at a time. Portland isn't huge, but since everything is focused on downtown it doesn't feel small either. Give it a shot - in my experience most people love it once they try. As for "a nearby town" - Portland's suburbs are just like suburbs anywhere else. Farther out there's a lot of really nice towns with spectacular natural settings along the coast (Astoria, Seaside, Canon Beach, etc) and around the mountains (Hood River, The Dalles, Bend) that are only a day trip away from Portland. But they definitely are small towns so I would get bored living there - but that may be what you're looking for. I grew up and lived on the westside of portland. Portland rains alot and is just a overpriced depressing dreary city with a bad economy to. i love it But IT WILL GET BORING EVENTUALLY also everyone knows everyone you may find yourself been around the same people all the time and visitin the same bars or clubs all the time its good when your older but not the funnest place to live when your 21 it is safe basically weather it rains most of the year the beaches are nice but cold To answer your questions directly: Safe: Yes Fun: Yes Good weather: In the Summer Geographically good: Excellent - right between the mountain and the ocean Etc: Great food and beer |
