Moving to Portland, affordable neighborhoods? |
Travel Info I'm 20 years old from Indiana and I want to move to Portland, OR sometime in the near future. Which neighborhoods have relatively cheap apartments (like $400/ month max.)? I heard the southeast side is more affordable than other parts of Portland. Is this true? I calculated that it will take nearly 700 dollars just to drive out here with gas and other expenses (car tune-up, hotel costs, food, etc). How much more do you think I should save up? I'm pretty young and naive and this is the first time I'll be leaving home (except for college, which i want to finish out in OR) and any advice would be appreciated. Travel Tips try reaching out on craigslist. if your not opposed to it short term house stay would be a good alternative to comming out here blowing your money and being tied into a lease in a bad-ie- scary neihborhood. yes SE can be cheaper, but i've rarely seen a place for under 500$, if your low income there's alot of studios downtown which you can try, but like i said for a non house share situation your looking at 500-600. try the house share then you can explore the places you may want to live. If your religious at all reaching out to a church might help you out also. hope that helps. Others There are some cheap places in SE Portland, but it is kinda dirty, especially compared to Indiana. To be honest, it may be your best bet price wise, unless you can go in with some other folks, cause rent prices in Portland are pretty steep. You are looking at over a grand to get something decent in a safe neighborhood. seriously. Good luck finding an apartment for $400/mo. I think you will only find that in NoPo, which can be pretty scary. If I were you, I'd look into finding rooms for rent on craigslist. If you can inch your way up to $500 you will find much more desirable, fun neighborhoods. |
