Where should I live in/near Portland, OR? |
Travel Info I am single moving to OR for a job in Oregon City soon. I'm looking for an apartment/condo close to work but also someplace where I will have easy access to public transportation to Portland downtown. Would it be too much of a drive with traffic jam to live in downtown Portland? Should I live in a close suburban downtown area? Where would you recommend? Please help!! Travel Tips Do you like living in the city? If so, find a place downtown, if not, find a place outside of the city. I don't know how busy Portland traffic is, but it can not be that bad. Others Oregon City and West Linn are, of course, closest. If you need more night life than these, you might consider Clackamas, apx. six miles north of OC, and apx. 8 mi. from heart of Portland. Lake Oswego is also close to both OC and Portland. Not sure how much public Trans is currently avial to OC/WL, but is supposed to come. During rush hours, traffic is dramatically slowed daily, but not like California clogs very often. Resident of Boring, Oregon's most exciting town. Sellwood is a really cool place to live and not too far from Oregon City. Outdoor Cafes, antique shops, beautiful big parks, etc. I think a direct bus route goes to Ore City from there down Milwaukee Ave. Sellwood is the last cool place between downtown and suburban purgatory in that direction. Portland Oregon is huge, Lots of areas to avoid and lots of nice things to see and do. If I was to move to Portalnd, single, working in downtown? I'd move and rent a room in a side area off the downtown area, bus and trains all go through there so easy to access the entire area. Use caution when walking early hours or late, stay in good areas. neighborhood means everything there. There is one street I liked well. It sits West of the train depot, Older houses but nice area, and a street with starbucks, Powel books ect, Colleg is downtown and lots to do. Oregon City has public trans. and is very livable. Gladstone, Milwaukie,Sellwood are pretty good places to live. They will have most price ranges for anyone. Light rail will be coming in a year or two also. Downtown Portland can get busy with traffic. There are many choices and prices to choose from. Oregon City has a college, and a few night life possibilities. Welcome to Oregon, but please help us keep it clean and safe. Lived in most places mentioned, for over 40 years. |
