Living in Oregon Coast? |
Travel Info I know it looks nice to live there but is it hard to make a living there? Travel Tips It is difficult to make a living at the coast unless you have a job that's universally transferable like doctor, veterinarian, teacher, mechanic, etc. In general, the jobs are in the service industry - restaurants, hotels, etc. and pay very poorly (I have cousins at the coast in this boat). Here are the job listings in the Daily Astorian (Astoria, OR): http://www.dailyastorian.com/main.asp?se... It's my observation that the towns on the coast have very few young people (20s and 30s) because they tend to move to a larger city where there are more job opportunities. Good luck. . Others WAY too much rain. MANY newcomers wind up in mental facilities for seasonal affective disorder, especially females, secondary to NEVER having enough daylight. Bring a pressure washer for the mold that will cover your house, car, driveway and basement every two months. There are actually three main kinds of mold. You'll learn about them, though, and which ones you just have to live with because they won't go away. There's some dangerous molds that grow in and around your showers that need close attention. There's a pink one that if it shows up, be sure to use a face mask when trying to clean it. Also, every spring, so much mold blooms in the drains themselves that they clog and spew spores up into the house through the drain and pets can get pretty sick from it. Just pour a few gallons of bleach down all the drains one day and the next day use a fizzly type of drain cleaner and that does the trick. I recommend placing a glass lasagna pan partially filled with bleach inside your car at night to keep the mold down somewhat in there. Keep your pets indoors as much as possible so they won't introduce the local chewing lice into your household. If they get indoors, regular lice shampoo on everyone every ten days worked pretty well. And, you have to fog the inside of the house and do all the bed linens and pillows every ten days, too. You have to stay ahead of the spiders, too. Be sure to spray well BEFORE moving in. Some of the spiders are so big and hairy they actually shake off like wet dogs in the rain. The rain can become beautiful after awhile. It's utterly fascinating how it can just rain and rain and rain for so many months. The people are unusually nice. Simple, no mean-spirits. Lots of Wiccans. This is just coastal areas. I don't know anything about interior Oregon. |
