Relocating to Portland - where's the bad side of town? |
Travel Info my boyfriend and I will be moving from Hawaii to Portland, OR within the next few weeks and more than likely will try to live close to PSU. I would like to know if there are certian areas of town that we should be aware of. I've been lookin at a lot of apartments and don't wanna get stuck in a crappy neighborhood. Any Suggestions?? Travel Tips You could check out... ->FOREST CREEK APARTMENTS<- http://www.rent.com/rentals/oregon/portl... -THE PORTLAND TOWERS- http://www.rent.com/rentals/oregon/portl... -REGENCY APARTMENTS- http://www.rent.com/rentals/oregon/portl... -GARDEN HOME WEST I & II- http://www.rent.com/rentals/oregon/portl... As well, I suggest living in NW Portland - near 23rd or in the Pearl District. From both areas, which are just a few streets away from each other, you can take the Portland Streetcar to PSU. To me, they're probably the safest areas to live in downtown. Others thats not a simple answer since alot of the neighborhoods historically "bad" are really improving. along MLK could be a little rough and parts of outer SE portland are kind of known as "felony flats". You could live in Vancouver Washington which is minutes away and cheaper than Portland generally speaking.I have some friends who are from Hawaii here who could help ya out if interested... also theres a few Hawaiian restaurants if youre feeling homesick!! janetjonesc21@yahoo.com The city really is amazing, and like the last poster the neighborrhoods are improving. If you're going to go to PSU there are several neighboorhoods in the area, and Beaverton (west) isn't far from downtown. My Lady and i live in Fairview, (east) about 15 minutes from downtown, and we both go to PSU and love it. Gresham isn't bad, Troutdale, Fairview, all of these towns are in East Multnomah County. If you don't have a car, the MAX runs all over the city, and the streetcar goes right thru the middle of PSU campus, so you can easily get around the city. You are going to love it here.... The North side of town is the worst part, so anything with North in the address is bad (NE and NW are OK, but N is bad). actualy that's really untrue, laurelhurst is in north east and it's the richest neihborhood in portland. also the homes around u of p are grogeous, that address is north too. there's tons of student housing around psu, beaverton isn't bad harder to get around without a car. i have to say most people would say gresham, gladstone, milwaukie, not the awesomest parts of town. but it's not an offense to anyone but no one is super surprised when things go down at 144th. there are parts of any town to avoid, beaverton included. but it depends on your income and if you have a car. there's alot of listings on craigs list for psu area, once your here you can explore and see if there's a better fit. Depends on what you want. North and Northeast are quickly gentrifying into some of the coolest places on the west coast. Go to Last Thurs on Alberta sometime. Mardi Gras time. I wouldnt go anywhere outside of 70th on the east side or the West hills on the west. Its all becoming bland suburban purgatory with lots of illegals and white trash tweakers with more and more crime. Belmont-Hawthorne, NE Broadway by Lloyd center, Mississippi Ave, Alberta arts district, NW 23rd, Hollywood are are all fun, cool neighborhoods right now with plenty of apts, outdoor cafes and nightlife. |
