Travel Info What places would be best to visit in Portland, Oregon, in the month of August? Travel Tips I know you will get many good ideas in the answers to this question, but most Portlanders don't even realize what a wonderful city they live in! In addition to visiting "places," just enjoy Portland by walking around it. It is one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities in the United States, and unlike most cities, the downtown area is vibrant and intact. Walk up Broadway Street - the main street through downtown - and appreciate the sidewalk cafes and shops. Take the MAX (the region's light-rail train) over to the Lloyd Center and marvel at the Willamette River as you cross it. Check out the 13 different bridges on the Willamette River - each an architectural marvel. Ride the Portland Streetcar out to Northwest 23rd Avenue, get off there and wander around. It is like visiting a funky version of some of the country's most famous retail streets. By all means go to Powell's - America's largest independent book store, where used books and new books are shelved side by side. Eat house-made roasted salmon hash at the Heathman Restaurant. August is when the salmon run occurs on the Columbia River and many restaurants will have fresh local salmon. There are just a million great things to do in Portland, but first and foremost you should just enjoy one of America's truly walkable, liveable urban areas. I hope you have a great trip. Portlanders are also incredibly friendly people. Others -Omsi -science center -Washington park zoo and Portland rose gardens (same park) -Make the hour and 1/2 jaunt out to the beach at Seaside or Cannon beach. -Portland Beavers baseball game (downtown stadium) -Multnomah falls (east of portland 25miles) -The restaurant Typhoon in Beaverton -Downtown Lake Oswego. (neat shops all in walking distance) Powells Books is a great place. Check it out, downtown on West Burnside. I went to the Japanese Garden and loved it. Great views on a clear day, and very beautiful and peaceful. |
