Is it true that you get tax free electronic items in portland? even in shops like circuit city? |
Travel Info even things like laptops come much cheaper in portland...is it true..if yes then why? Travel Tips Oregon does not have a state sales tax. So yeah, you get tax free stuff in Portland. For those of us used to paying 6% or 7% sales tax on everything, its kinda strange to pay the sticker price on items in the store. Did you know that if an Oregon resident shops outside of Oregon (Washington or Idaho, for example) they still don't have to pay sales tax?? Cool huh? Others It is true that Oregon does not have a sales tax and while almost correct that Oregon residents do not pay sales tax in neighboring states, that only goes so far. Usually only the towns/cities close to the Oregon border have a "tax exempt" form to sign or a key on the register...You do have to show your Oregon driver's license or ID for the tax exemption (they record your ID #, which is also the tax exempt #) Also, Oregon residents do not pay sales tax on anything they order via internet or mail order. Some people mistakenly purchase large items, like vehicles in Oregon, thinking they will get away without paying sales tax, however, when they license the car in their own state, they get whacked anyway. it's all tax free, everything. we have a higher income tax and astronomical property tax. taxes have to come from some where. just not sales so far. All you guys are absolutely correct! BUT! Our liquor tax (inclusive of the SRP) are ridiculous!!! So high! The OLCC really kicks you between the legs on this one. |
