Going to Seattle and Portland soon. What are the "must sees?"? |
Travel Info Will be in Seattle for only a couple days, Portland for 4. Best attractions, restaurants, etc.? Travel Tips In Seattle, take a ride to the top of the Space Needle for an amazing view of the city and sound. Ride the tram from down- town to Seattle Center, where the Space Needle restaurant is. Check out the fish toss at Pikes Place Market and sample some of the goodies for sale. Take a ferry ride. Seattle is the unofficial coffee drinkers capital. Home of Starbucks too. Portland, try the bar menu for cheap appetizers that fill you if you order two of anything at Newport Bay, or Stanfords. Both are owned by the same company and offer a varied Happy Hour menu. For less than $3.00 at most of them around the Portland Metro area. Lots of the bigger restaurants have good bargains during Happy Hour. Try a burger and home made fries at Stanfords, and Fish and Chips at Newport Bay. Newport, is right on the Willamette River, with a neat nighttime view when the lights go on. There are other locations, outside of the downtown area tho. If you like Chinese food, try the Golden Crown in Beaverton. A well kept secret with a traditional menu. Staff is friendly and service is very good.. There's always food to take home after. The portions are not skimpy. Check out the Pittock Mansion in the hills of the SW side of town. It's an experience with a great view of the city. It was once home to the publisher of the Oregonian newspaper, back in the days of it's origin. By all means, take the Columbia River Gorge tour. Sip something from the restaurant at Multnomah Falls, and take the trail beside the falls to the bridge. It's has an amazing view of below where the pool of water is where the falls empty. There are bus tours you can take to get there. During Rose Festival in early June, you can see the parade which has floral floats and marching bands galore. Also on Fathers Day, is the Indian Pow Wow at Delta Park, in North Portland along the freeway leading to Vancouver, Washington and points north. The event is annual with Indians from around the country competing in dancing competitions and are dressed in colorful regalia. The Portland and surrounding areas are known for the greenery and the natural waterfalls and rivers. And if you really feel adventurous, take one of the casino shuttles to the coast where the vans will take you for an afternoon of gambling, and fine tasting food in their restaurants on either one of the Indian reservations. I suggest the Chinook Wind casino, which is on the ocean at Lincoln City. There's a lovely view of the ocean. And there are restaurants and plenty of gambling venues. Oh, yes, Portland also has their Saturday Market every Saturday morning, near the waterfront downtown. Craft vendors make and sell their crafts near the riverfront of the Willamette. There are other sights, depending on your interests. Many like to check out the Japanese Garden in Portland, for it's beautiful greenery and waterfall. Or the zoo, or even OMZI for it's science exhibits. So welcome to the Northwest, and enjoy! Source(s): Lived in the Portland/Vancouver area for most of my adult life. Other Travel Tips Hoh Valley Rainforest, Olympica National Park: Pikes Place Market, Seattle Saturday Market, Portland Powell's Bookstore, Portland Columbia Gorge, I-84 (20+ miles east of Portland) Renee's restaurant at spin needle in Seattle. Take a ferry across Puget sound. Multnomah falls on I84 east of Portland 30 minutes, also have upscale restaurant. Portland zoo, botanical gardens, and Chinese gardens are all grouped together. Traveling without kids take in all of downtown nightlife along front street next to river in downtown Portland, but be careful if you are alone. Do not go under any bridges or down alleys. Best Malaysian restaurant in the U.S. is in Seattle named "Malay Satay Hut". Visit the EMP, St. Ignacius Chapel, and the Library in Seattle. Not sure about Portland. Hit palisades (restaurant in Magnolia) Great northwest food. Try to hit Alki beach (across bay from downtown Seattle in W. Seattle) around sunset. Pacific Science center is a great one for young and old. (In Seattle center along with Experience Music Project, Space Needle, etc.) Catch a Mariners game at Safeco. (Life long memory) In Portland, hit El Gaucho (also in Seattle-Bell town) or Typhoon (Downtown or Beaverton) Seaside or Canon Beach are 1.5 hrs. away, but lots of fun at the beach. OMSI is similar to Seattle Science Center, but has rotating exhibits that are really cool. Laurelhurst brew pub is a great time. Downtown Lake Oswego has many fun upscale shops along the waterfront that are top notch. There are tons of guides for fishing for Salmon, steelhead, sturgeon or walleye this time of year. (Lance Fisher comes to mind) Washington park zoo and the Portland rose gardens and the japanese gardens are all in the same park. Have fun, they are both great cities to visit. Lived in Seattle 10 yrs. Live in Oregon, and service Portland now. |
