Should I move to Portland or stay in Seattle? |
Travel Info What are the "GENERAL" pro's and con's of each city? Travel Tips It would depend on your lifestyle. Portland is smaller and less sophisticated. That would appeal to some people, while to others a bigger city would be more exciting. If you're into rock concerts, you'll end up driving to Seattle or Tacoma. There's a good art scene in Portland, but nothing like Seattle. Seattle is bigger and has more money. If you're into recycling, folk music, hiking, sports, or ecology, you'll be happy in Oregon. If you're more into underground films, ballet, and boutiques, you'll be happier in Seattle. Portland is probably more affordable. You could check out housing prices online at www.oregonlive.com That's the URL for the Oregonian, the biggest newspaper in Oregon, located in Portland. Oregon is a much poorer state than Washington. If you fall upon hard times, you're much better off in Washington. Oregon doesn't have general hospitals which have to see you regardless of ability to pay. Not a good place to be poor and sick. Washington has a better security net. Oregon has an income tax, but no sales tax. Washington has a sales tax, but no income tax. Car registration is much cheaper in Oregon. Employment opportunities have always been less in Oregon than Washington. Oregon has tight environmental and land use regulations which keep the state nice but have the side effect of discouraging business and limiting housing. Make sure you have a job before moving to Portland. I have known people of color who tell me that they felt much more comfortable in Seattle than Portland. Other Travel Tips They are both infested with Liberals but if I had to make a choice, I'd pick Seattle.....the coffee is better. Are you considering moving to Portland, Dorset on the south coast of England UK? I used to live in Portland and it is BEAUTIFUL! If you live in seatle then you are probably used to the cold weather so if you move to portland it will be pretty much the same but portland is much prettier!!! August is sooo pretty in oregon. I grew up in Portland and spent my summers as a kid in downtown Seattle staying at the edge water there on the pier all summer. I personally prefer Seattle if I still lived in the Northwest. I left the Northwest a year ago after 33 years there and now currently live in Texas. Stay in Seattle. Its more sophisticated! |
