What are some nice suburbs around Portland, OR?

Travel Info
We are thinking about moving to Portland someday. We are currently in L.A. and think the city sounds nice. We like liberal, progressive, metropolitan and the outdoors. Can someone give us descriptions of the surrounding suburbs. What's nice and has good public schools? Thanks!

Travel Tips
Well, the City of Portland is definitely liberal, progressive, and has outdoors around it! However, if you are looking at the 'burbs, you are looking at less liberal and progressive areas. Have you considered the close-in Eastside (of Portland itself)? That *may* be more what you are looking for. The 'burbs tend to be so far away from Portland distance-wise as well as culturally that you may as well be living in Anywheresville, USA. Of course there are little pocket areas of progressiveness around the outskirts of the city.. maybe you would like Westmoreland/Sellwood area or Multnomah Village or Lake Oswego or even parts of the "West Hills" area. You should just go take a vacation & check it out for yourself! Good luck to you. Source(s): grew up there!
Other Travel Tips
centennial district is a very nice school district. Fairview area is nice, beaverton, gresham, belmont dist... It's also certein areas in those districts that are nice, like any city there ARE places you might rather not live in...
lived in portland for 20 + years
The best suburbs, I think, are the ones on the West Hills [Portland]... Bethany area [Portland], in Beaverton, Tigard, and Lake Oswego. Each suburb has good public schools... each area is really nice. No matter which area you choose to live in, you're going to be linked with good schools.
-I'm a high school student in Portland.
tualatin, west linn, lake oswego on the west side,

Gladstone on the east side, I'd say all of those towns have good schools.
