Travel Tips I have live in the Eugene/Springfield area my entire life. I will give you the pros and cons: Pros Tons of outdoors stuff. Fishing, kayaking, mountains all around you. It is so beautiful here. Good People: For the most part, there are alot of good people here. Lots of hippie types, rednecks (i mean that in a loving way!), punk, upper class, middle class. The hispanic and islander population has grown dramatically in the past 10 years. Local Farms: A 5 minute drive out of town will get you some of the best produce in the country. Yum Yum. Temperate Weather: It does rain alot here and the summers aren't too long, but it doesn't get extremely hot or extremely cold. Usually we get a little snow on the valley floor but it doesn't stick around long. Crime: While we have really high property crimes (theft) there isn't much violence and we have a low murder rate for the population density. Traffic: In certain areas of town it can get real busy, but what we are used to a traffic jam lasts 5 minutes (maybe...ha!) It isn't too bad if compared with larger cities. Homeless: You don't see them so much in view, they tend to live under bridges or in the shelter. Lots of panhandlers tho and sometimes they can get aggressive. Expense: Depending on your lifestyle and the type of work you do this can vary. If you don't want to live in a tract home you can find very reasonable housing. The wages are comparable and give you enough to still put away something every month. But you should know where to shop and get the best deals. Downtown: On a scale of 1 - 10 I give it a 5. There is still alot of work that could be done there. Lots of fun shops, but its starting to be overrun with big businesses. Its not run down by any means, just could use some work. This has been a huge topic of debate here in the recent years. Crowded? No.... Worth Moving to: I like it enough to stay here. Nice Housing: Yes, but those are all tract houses as stated before. I hate those. But if you are renting there are some nice places or if you want to buy there are tons of fixer-uppers that have tons of opportunity for improvement. NO SALES TAX!! Cons: It rains alot Nobody wants to pay taxes so the police are stretched to their limits. University of Oregon: Lots of young people which is good for the economy, but some of them can get out of hand. Bottle Return: We have a bottle return deposit program here...it sucks. Meth Heads: Lots of meth. You just gotta keep an eye out, trust me, you can't miss them. You can email me if you like with more questions...I have 29 years experience here. silly_lil_me_06@yahoo.com Others Eugene is clean and green with a good University and an excellent Concert Hall which has the Annual Bach Festival. Next to the Concert Hall is a badly run Hilton Hotel with poor Customer Service. Eugene has an excellent Volvo Dealer. It also has some good Restaurants. Eugene has a good climate. my sis and I have been to Eugene when we travel, we go through Oregon, but sometimes we stop in Eugene. It seems nice there, the people seem alright, the Weather was good, it didn't seem run down, or dirty. We went to a good Pizza restaurant called Izzy's. the traffic was fine. hope this helps. Hi! I am a native Oregonian who lived in Eugene for about 15 years. It is a classic "university town," with an Oregon twist - a well-developed arts and crafts scene, some good jazz clubs, superb restaurants, very friendly people and a mania for sports (but especially running/jogging). Eugene is not an expensive town and nice housing is reasonably priced. I wouldn't call it crowded at all. It has been called a "hippie town," but I think it is more accurate to say that it is very politically progressive. Of course it is clean!! As are all Oregonn cities. Oregon was the first state to pass a "bottle bill" and are fanatic about litter. Eugene is much less expensive than Portland. Oregon, generally, has a homeless problem, but it is not too bad in Eugene. The weather is very moderate, but the rainy season lasts from October through May. I would definitely live in Eugene again - it is a wonderful place - but it is not big enough for me these days. I prefer Portland or San Francisco! Hope this helps. (Note: I am sorry to say that some of the other answerers didn't know what they were talking about and had obviously not LIVED in Eugene.......) Long-time Eugene resident who raised two kids there. |
