Is Oregon California's Canada, and Washington's Mexico? |
Travel Info It seems like when you compare the US to Canada, it is similar to comparing California to Oregon. You can cross the northern border, and enter a land of hippies and forests. The same goes for the Washington/Oregon compared to the US/Mexico. You can go south and buy things with no sales tax and have your gas pumped for you like a king. Travel Tips I think California is Oregon's Mexico. People come here by the droves for a better way of life. Oregonians grumble about "those damn Californians" coming up here and driving the housing market up, driving crazy, bringing gang activity, etc. Tom McCall's sentiment is still shared by most Oregonians... Source(s): Jan. 12, 1971, when Tom McCall went on national television and told people to stay out of his state. "Visit, but don't stay." Well, not really. Try as he might, though, Tom McCall spent years untangling the message he sent to the world that night. As McCall prepared to start his second term as Oregon's governor, CBS correspondent Terry Drinkwater asked him to sum up his views on conservation, which had already made him famous. "Come visit us again and again," McCall said for Drinkwater's national audience. "But for heaven's sake, don't come here to live." (taken from oregonlive.com) Other Travel Tips LOL. An excellent observation. Although don't forget about San Francisco, more specifically Berkeley, when you are placing hippies. I agree with Genessa. Excellent Tom McCall quotes -- he is a truly great Oregonian (I am 5th generation Oregonian, BTW). Too many Californians are invading Oregon, looking for cheaper housing and less traffic. They seem particularly fond of Bend, Portland and Medford. Bend is a huge city now and it seems like just a few years ago it was a quiet little town. One of my friends has a shirt that says "University of California at Eugene" because it seems like there are more Californians at U of O than Oregonians. I think Washington and Oregon are very similar. Not different enough to say that Oregon is Washington's Mexico. I had always liked Tom McCall, a wize and nice man. |
