What about tipping in Portugal (Lisbon)? |
Travel Info What about tipping in Portugal (Lisbon)? Travel Tips There is no hard and fast rule for tipping. I'm in Spain, Andalusia, just a few hours from Portugal. Since we moved here on orders, my husband and I were taken through an intercultural readiness group class. It was great, we learned about the "little things" that really do count here. Most people do not tip. Tourists, even Americans are not expected to, but if done so, it is a nice gesture. The waiters and waitresses in the EU are paid an hourly wage or salary that is comparable with the living standard, unlike the US where they are paid next to nothing, and expected to live on tips. Since they are paid a fair wage, it is not expected, but as a warning, it also means that they don't rather care too much about your service! lol! If you receive good service, you may tip, but if you choose not to, no one will say anything bad, it is the norm not to leave anything. Others The last time I visited Lisbon, I paid 30 euros for a taxi fare, that was supposed to cost around 15-17 euros, so my guess is that "some people" choose to add the tip whether they deserve it or not... My guess is you may have been robbed by an idiot. Tipping... Erm, you'll only tip in restaurants if you liked the service, most of the times, since living is hard for everyone, me included, I tip nothing. Now, imagine you've spent, say, 40 euros on a meal. You could leave two extra euros, for example. Or one. I mean, it doesn't make that much difference as it does in the States. But there have been times when I gave no tips in the States because I didn't like the service and the waitress looked she wanted to kill me. But I don't care. I don't give something for nothing and it's my hard eraned money. There, I hope this answered your question. Tipping would be based on what you want to leave, restaurants is the only place that I would really leave a tip, at the bars they really don't understand when you do but they love it, and it cabs I don't =) Hi!! ok tipping is not too commun in any place in Portugal, why? We are all pretty poor!! Hahaha, no seriously, it's not traditional, so no one really expects you to tip them. Places where tiping is ok to do and more commun, restaurantes of a medium level where you have a waiter, and taxi's you normally round the bill. http://experienceportugal.blogspot.com/... xek my site for more info on Portugal, lisbon it'll probably give you a great idea about the country!! have fun!! http://experienceportugal.blogspot.com/... |
