I will be in Lisbon, Portugal at the beginning of May. Any suggestions on interesting things to?

Travel Info
I will be with my partner and in-laws who are in their 70's, but very active and interested in non-beachy things. We will have a car, be there for 4 days, and might like to see (and stay) beyond Lisbon.

Travel Tips
Just a few hours drive from Portugal is Spain. Most of the roads in between the countries are not even marked when you leave one and enter another. If you go to Portugal, stop over, take a quick drive and see a bullfight. I know that some people see them as violent etc, but the bulls don't always die, some are done on top of the world-famous Andalusian horses, and it is a part of the history and culture that is Spain. (Sorry I'm a little Biased, as I live in So. Spain!)

Your husband (I hate the term partner) and you could try to learn a little Portuguese before you go(I did), it will endear you to the locals and make your stay much more fun. Historical sights abound, ancient Napoleonic battle sites etc should interest your in-laws.Don't drive around Lisbon itself until you are used to driving on the left, its a nightmare at first, then not so bad.
Visit Obidos, a quaint little town(not too far) on the freeway north, a very Portuguese place with a pousada (sort of hotel) in the castle. It would be worth staying there at least one night, the food is excellent. We've been before and would go again.
Boa viagem e boas ferias.
Hi.
Outside Lisbon there is Sintra which can take you a day or two to see.
There is a toy museum there, for instance.
You can visit the palaces (there are 6 there and you can go here http://www.cm-sintra.pt/categoria.aspx?i... to peek a little in each one of them).

Lisbon itself has a lot to offer but if you are coming with elderly although active people, it can be tiring, specially if you like churches because there are a lot of them!
A must see is the S. Jorge (St. George) Castle where you can catch a glimpse of all of Lisbon.
Also the Torre de Bel茅m (Bethlehem Tower), the Padr茫o dos Descobrimentos (homage to the people who went on to chart the seas), the Monastery of Jer贸nimos (they are all in the same place, near the river and you can see them in a day).

Another good place to visit is Cascais.
There is a boardwalk that goes on for a few miles accompanying the beaches and is very relaxing.

Oh... I could tell you lots of things but you have only 4 days so my advice is:
1 - Don't run around trying to see everything or you'll end up seeing nothing.
2 - Go to http://www.atl-turismolisboa.pt/home.asp... to find more information about where to stay, where to eat, what to visit.
3 - Don't forget to visit the tourism offices in Lisbon first because they have useful informations to itineraries and points of interest.
4 - Lisbon itself is very complicated in terms of traffic so it might be better to take public transportation.

Hope I helped, hope you have a nice trip and hope you enjoy it so much that you come back more!
Me: portuguese and proud of it.
You should head to the town of Sintra, it's fantastic.

If you like shopping at all, try visiting the biggest shopping mall in Iberian peninsula, it's called Colombo.
