Travel Info I have never been to portugal, I am going with my husband who is Portugeuse, and his family in a couple of weeks. We will be attending the festival in Fatima on May 12th and 13th and I want to know what to expect. I hear it is very religious, I guess I just want to know what that means. I really appreciate any information anyone has. Thank you Travel Tips Hi!! Great you're going to Portugal! Other Travel Tips Going to Fatima on May festivities can be a very strong experience for you if you are a believer, but can be disappointing if you are only there as a tourist. The May festivities really touches you inside if you go there as a pilgrim because you see people who go there bearing the hope of finding help, people who face real problems in their life. As it is the first time you go there and if you are a sensitive person, it may impress you very much. As a tourist, it may be disappointing because it will be very crowded and it may even be impossible for you to go near the sanctuary. So, if this is your case, as an advice to you, don't go there on the 13th but wait a day or two more. You will feel the environment and the faith that is in there and you will be able to visit it calmly. I love going there, but i never go on May 13th for being too crowded. I watch the festivities on TV and go there when it is not so crowded. Hope this helps and ... welcome to Portugal Its wonderful if you are a believer and extremely boring if you are not. People do not worship a statue made of stone, the pray to the Holy Mary who showed herself to three innocent children to leave them a message, that if people do not stop war and starting to love each other the end of the world is near. There are a lot of approaches to it, but take it as people gathering to pray and thank for the miracles in every day life, and everyone has had a little miracle in their life. It's really crowded and hot, long walks and poor parking though, all the inconvenient of thousands of people together in one place in the spring. Either you believe or not, respect above all that others do. And enjoy |
