Hi! It's great to know you are intrested in such a great country like Portugal. Portugal has it's winter but it's rain not snow. The more south you go the less rain you get. Temperatures, are mild and you still get plenty of sunshine...Yeah it's pretty good!

Having no traveling experience to Europe, I would suggest you going to check it out firsthand, at least I would do...
I think maybe you'd like some place more "tropical". But, yes, it would be a change from the rough Canadian winters.

EDIT: about yail's comment - it may rain little in the Algarve but it suree rained cats and dogs up here in Porto.

EDIT2: About experienceportugal's comment - there is snow in several parts of the country. Only not downsouth and in the coast (because it's ocean influenced; you think of New York, for example, and although it's by the ocean it's a continental climate).
Actually the Algarve of Portugal is already a popular winter destination for Canadians. Many tour companies offer packages that include airfare, apartment, rental car, etc.

I live in Canada now and lived through my first winter living here and I'll tell you, the winters in the Algarve are MUCH easier on you but it does rain a bit during the winter, not that much but it does rain. It's a great place to go... but as the other person said, maybe the Bahamas might be a COMPLETE change for you? But the Algarve during the winter is really nice and warm so when you go back you're not hit in the face with the cold.
Every winter is raining less and less here in Portugal. This last winter was even warmer than all the others. I live in the Algarve, but I would rather recommend Lisbon, or Porto. There's plenty more to do and see.
