We stayed in the Sao Joa area and had a wonderful time.

I would recommed hiring a car as an excellent way to get around and visit some of the fantastic places.....

There are many beautiful beaches - Vale de Lobo was stunning, and worth a visit is Praia de Rocha which is close to Portimao which is a main town and had the best ice cream we found in the whole of the Algarve.....

A trip into the mountains also proved worthwhile and something a bit different, Monchique was where we headed for, and enjoyed.

Albufeira is the main town and has loads of shops, a beach, and also historical things to look at. But as it is the main place, it does get busy, so we actually preferred to jump in the car and head off exploring.

I'm sure, whatever you do, you will enjoy your holiday.

We keep saying we are going back, but haven't got round to it yet. Really must do something about that...... lol

Enjoy and have fun - hope I've helped a bit.
Since you will already be in Portugal, I would recommend a 2h30 hour trip to Lisboa (Lisbon) the capital of Portugal.
It's really worth the time and money (30鈧?total by bus).
It's a wonderful city, with lots of monuments, museums, beautiful sights. You could easily fill a day just wondering around.
I'm Portuguese, and live in the Algarve, and I can tell you it is beautiful and the weather is great, but Lisbon is much better.
If you are going to the heart of the Algarve area, I can recommend the following places. I have been there last year. If you are still looking for a nice accommodation, I can recommend Holiday Velvet. I have had very good experiences with them, and they responded very quickly to my wishes. http://www.holiday-velvet.com.

In the Algarve, I especially liked the towns of Vilamoura and Albufeira. Vilamoura has 6 golf courses and numerous bars and restaurants and clubs. With it's exceptional climate in the heart of the Algarve, and sun all year round, it is a fantastic place to relax and unwind.
Albufeira is closeby with its infamous strip and traditional old town as well as various beaches with blue flag european awards. The town of Albufeira itself consists of "old" and "new" sections which merge seamlessly into an extensive holiday-land suburbia, spreading off back east along the coast to Balaia, Olhos d'Agua and Falesia, and west to S茫o Rafael, Gal茅 and the links golf course at Salgados.

The whole area, greater Albufeira you could call it, is the most tourist-intensive place in Portugal. It has very little to do with the real Portugal, or with the real planet earth for that matter, but people come here in droves and have the time of their lives.
The Old and New Albufeira Town has beautiful local beaches, restaurants, shops, banks and a vivid night-life can be found here. The Algarve Shopping Complex offers cinema, bowling alley, restaurants, discount retail outlets. There are several excursions to Zoo Marine, Water Parks, Boat Trips and many more exciting pursuits on the Algarve. There is a local supermarket, bakery, newsagents, tennis and children's sandy play area which can be reached via a footbridge.

The Algarve offers many superb sandy beaches which are all within easy reach.
Algarve is located in south Portugal. Montechoro is known at the place in Algarve where the sea is at the highest temperature of all algarve.
If you like to Party, Albufeira is the best place.
If you like boats, Vilamoura is the coolest.
If you like historical places, go to Sagres where started Portuguese discoveries.
If you like animals, go to zoo marine wich is very nice.

I hope you'll enjoy your stay in my country!
