How do you say hostel in Portugues?

And what exactly is a pousada? I was under the impression that a pousada was hostel. But after doing some research it looks like a pousada is more of a portuguese thing rather than a european thing? Is that correct?

There are 2 types of Pousada here. There is Pousadas de Portugal, which are hotels in historical places, and a bit expensive. Then there are Pousadas da Juventude, targeted mainly to young people, much cheaper and always overbooked. The bedrooms are for 4, 6 or more people.
