Next year we are planning on travelling to portugal.?

Travel Info
anyone been there? suggestions as to best places to visit? there are two of us travelling together, we are not married, but living together, and someone told us that in these old countries they are very picky about unmarried people sharing a hotel room, or small house. anyone know if this is a common thing in portugal or did our friends just happen to hit a very closeminded area?

Travel Tips
I don't what time of the year are you planning on coming to Portugal so I'll give a general perspective.

1st the continental side:

Algarve - excellent beaches, some of them considered to be in European Top Rank. The west side is more touristic and cosmopolitan. But also more crowds. Algarve's East side is more peaceful also with some good beach but not so cosmopolitan and with fewer hotels but less expensive. You can also see the Algarve countryside just 10-20 km North. It is a small mountain very very quiet with few traditional villages with no more than 10-20 houses.

Lisbon - Capital city. Lots of museums, galleries, shopping, historical city. It is surely a must. Good to visit any part of the year. You can go to some typical Fado house and hear this famous and traditional music type. Quite near you have Sintra one of the most beautiful Portuguese villages. With a great palace everyone should visit. There are also several beach no more than 20 km away.

Coimbra - Another typical city, mainly a students city because of the University (created in XIII century, 1290). Some of the most important Portuguese people studied there. Coimbra's Fado is a very famous type of fado.

Santar茅m - It is the Gothic art capital. If you like this art style you should go. Several beautiful Churches and a great historical part. It was the city conquered by the Portuguese people.

Serra da Estrela - It is a mountain, best if visited during winter time. It was a small Ski Station and great views.

F谩tima - It is a religious ans spiritual city. Has a very big Sanctuary and near by it Virgin Mary appeared to 3 little shepeards. The Pope John Paul II, believed that his life was saved by her and offered the bullet that hit him that the saint. It is there for everybody to see it.

Oporto (Porto) - 2nd Portuguese biggest city also very beautiful and cosmopolitan.

Braga - Another big University city. If you can't go to Coimbra at least go to Braga.

Now the islands:

Azores (A莽ores) - a group of 9 small islands. Great green countryside. They are vulcanic islands and you can find very beautiful places and lagoons. Sea travelers always stop in those island where you have almost sailors pubs like Peter's

Madeira- 2 islands more developted than Azores (A莽ores) with more touristic side especially for those that want go beaches.

Finally, I want really and to argue about the couple/married question. But everywhere you go you can rent a room and no one really cares if you are married or not. Nobody will ask that. I am sure you won't find that kind of retarded and close mind view anywhere.

Hope this answer helps you and sorry for being so long. Anything you need just ask. Source(s): Born and live in Portugal
Other Travel Tips
I've been there and it's beautiful. I'd suggets visiting Lisbon, the Algarve ( Southern beaches), Serra Da Estrella (mountain in Portugal), Coimbra to visit the oldest university, Fatima which is a religious center, and the Azores. It's true that in small towns they look down on sharing rooms with unmarried couples. I saw this firsthand with my two friends. They wanted to share a room and they lied and said they were engaged so that they could. If i were you, I'd just say that or wear fake rings....they'll never know.
been there and loved it
