Travel Info Any suggestions on where to go in Portugal? I will be there with a car for 2 weeks.? Travel Tips I am there every May for two weeks ..There are 4 main areas to see.. You will have to choose 2. The North, mountains, rivers, wineries, the central area, called Alentejo,beautiful scenery, open spaces, historic villages, and the Algarve, which is in the South, and has the most famous beaches...(There are also beaches along the entire Portuguese coast) And, lastly, the Lisbon area, where a car is handy for some areas like Sintra but not recommended for Lisbon itself. It really depends what time of year you are going. If its your first trip, I would recommend Lisbon and surrounding areas, Cascais, Estoril, Sintra, Obidos and then drive down to the Algarve and stay in one of the seaside villages...Albuefeira is one of the nicest. Not so small anymore..lots of life, located right on the beach.Rocamar is a small hotel right on the cliff above the town beach...Won t need the car for Albufeira but you can take wonderful day trips to Monchique, Portimao, Tavira and Faro.. Others The Mountain area North of Oporto is really nice. Then if you have time drive along the coast to the Algarve & explore the coastline. Portugal in 2 weeks and with a car is wonderful ;) If I were you I would do a coast to coast. Would start at the North (Minho, Porto...) would pass Lisbon (right in the center of Portugal) and would finish it in Algarve (south)... resting in one of the beautiful beaches :) Enjoy it! Stay away from the Algarve (unless you want to mix with Brits). Lisbon is lovely with lots of culture. North is beautiful (Minho and Tras os Montes) Serra da Estrela (mountain) is lovely. I would recommend anywhere north of Lisbon away from all the tourists if you want a taste of the real Portugal. Eat where the locals eat andnot only will you get great food, but very cheap too. Enjoy it. |
