Travel Tips If I remember it well, the name of the country ("Portugal") is still associated today with oranges in some Arabic speaking countries. I think the word for "orange" in Arabic means both "Portugal" and "orange"! Or is it "portugal" that means both "Portugal" and "orange"? (Maybe our Arabic speaking friends can give us a hand here! Anyone?) This is not because Portugal is famous for its oranges (although they have quite good ones!), but because it is believed that Portuguese sailors took oranges with them - as a good supply of vitamin C, which can prevent scurvy! - on their voyages around Africa, the Middle and the Far East, during the "Discoveries" period, in the 15th and 16th Century. Oranges were an easy way to carry and provide that supply of Vitamin C. Not that the sailors were aware at the time that vitamin C could prevent scurvy, but they did know from their own experience that oranges (and fresh vegetables too!) could. Hence, some of those areas peoples, who were seeing oranges for the very first time, associated "Portugal" with "oranges" and I believe that this association was absorbed by the(ir) language(s) and that this association still persists today. Source(s): I think I know... :)) Other Travel Tips no lemons and limes.. not really No. Portugal is more well known for its natural resources of cork and fish, and of course its history and warm people. yes it is well known for oranges i have just got back from portugal and we got talking to a nice portugese man and he was telling us about there reputation for oranges all you see out there is orange trees Portugal and Spain do have oranges but they are not that famous, I think! |
