Why doesn't Portugal produce more wine?

Why doesn't the Portugese government or private companies in Portugal produce more wine ? they certainly have the means for it & they can produce really good wine.It would help their economy greatly.

The main reason is because the vines are in small areas compared with the ones in France or in the USA, and as the quality has to be the best, if the weather isn't perfect and spoils the year it has to be used for mixture wines instead of the high quality ones.

the wine producers in Portugal use a lot of their wine as the basis for port [a fortified wine ] and believe me they produce a lot of it [thank fully as i love the stuff
