When you arrive at the airport in Portugal, go to an ATM machine and withdraw money from your checking account. Before you leave home, visit your bank to check that your ATM card is configured for International withdrawals. Make sure you have a numerical pin code. They do not have letters on their ATM keypads.

Exchange over there... the exchange rate will be better.

Although almost everywhere in the world accepts the american dollar.
Just take a few with you my dear, you don't want to carry around too much cash, do you? If you order them from your local post office a few days in advance you will find it is the cheapest way. Also most cash machines in Portugal are Multi lingual.

I would take euros. Although this is risky I was in the Algarve in the summer and the handling charge on cashing euro travellers cheque was exorbitant in some banks.
Best to get a bank to make exchange here.
