Can anyone tell me the meaning of Puerto Rico's Moto? |
Travel Info The Moto of PR is Juan es su nombre, or John is his name... What is the meaning of this? Whats the story behind it? Just curious... Travel Tips "Joannes Est Nomen Ejus" means "His Name is John". When Columbus discovered Puerto Rico, he named the island San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist). The capital city was called "Puerto Rico" (Rich Port). Due to a cartographical error that was never corrected the names were swapped, and the island became Puerto Rico and the capital city became San Juan. The phrase "His Name is John" is from the New Testament (Luke 1:63). Zachary, who was the father of John The Baptist, said these words at the naming ceremony for his son. It was traditional for a father to give his son the same name he had, however when an angel of the Lord appeared to John and announced that his wife would give birth to a son, God's request was that he name is son John. (Luke 1:13) Queen Isabella, who was Queen of Spain at the time of Puerto Rico's discovery was highly religious and when the coat of arms was granted to the island, this phrase was added to reflect the importance of the name of the saint for whom the island was named for originally.
