Why is the gay population so rampant in PR? |
Travel Info I am a frequent visitor of PR, and I have found homesexuality very out in the open there. Now this isnt a problem for me, but i find it so unusual because almost all of the other island in the caribbean are quite the opposite? In PR gay men and straight men actually hang out as buddies! I am wondering am I just an idiot to think that a gay man and a straight man who hang out all the time joke about their sexuality, that the straight man is really straight, or should I see it for what it is, he's probably bi/gay? So hence two questions... why so openly gay in this caribbean island as opposed to others and is he gay? Travel Tips Puertorricans tend to be well educated and, especially in San Juan, open minded. You probably haven't travelled to the center or more rural areas of the island, people's way of thinking is very different from that in San Juan. But I am glad to hear that Puerto Rico is an accepting and open minded place, because all my life I have thought differently. I myself am straight, but respect the gay community and their believes. Source(s): Native Puerto Rican from the center of the island. Other Travel Tips i really havent noticed to many i have only seen a couple of transexuals and about two gays oh and me and my freinds jokingly act gay just for fun but we are not gay live there in thenorth western coast Homosexuality in Puerto Rico is like the song "Que Sera, Sera". Unless one is a religious fanatic who pickets cruise ships because they are full of gay tourists who bring lots of money to the island, most Puerto Ricans are very liberal. What happens in one's bedroom stays there and they don't care if one is gay. Puerto Ricans are very friendly and unlike many other Caribbean islands, the island is subject to U.S. federal law. The U.S. legal system has shaped attitudes on the island and Puerto Ricans rather move forward in the sense of human rights than other islands such as Jamaica where homosexuals are killed and the government doesn't do anything to control such actions. With no laws in place, gays in the Caribbean often seek asylum in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. or Europe. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a Texas sodomy law was unconstitutional, therefore, which such ruling all laws curtailing and prohibiting all forms of sex (with the exception of sex with a minor and beastiality) were overturned in all of the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Curacao and Aruba are also extremely gay friendly islands. They were probably influenced by the Netherlands and the liberalism that is Dutch society.
