Does a permanent legal resident of the U.S. need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico? |
Travel Info I have a green card and a Dominican passport. Do I need to bring them with me or will my Massachusetts driver's license be enough? Thanks Travel Tips No, you don't need a apssport. Only a valid picture ID... Cheers... Others You might want to check with any travel agent or your City Offices just to be on the safe side. They are asking for passports for almost anywhere that you travel, especially since you are only a legal resident. No you do not...PR is a part of hte US so all the people there are US citizens....so no need for passports.. born in NY....live in PR If any one tells you that you do need a passport they are INCORRECT. As a legal permanent resident (green card) of the US you can travel to Puerto Rico (and WORK) without having to have a passport. Puerto Rico is treated the same as any other state in the US with regards to travel. Enjoy your visit here. If you need ideas on what Puerto Rico has to offer, check out www.frommers.com and also the posts here www.visit-the-coqui.com http://www.frommers.com http://www.visit-the-coqui.com "International Travel A Permanent Resident of the United States can travel freely outside of the US. A passport from the country of citizenship is normally all that is needed. To reenter the US a Permanent Resident normally needs to present the green card (Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551) for readmission. A reentry permit is needed for reentry for trips greater than one year but less than two years in duration." Just a note: Last time I went to PR ( back in January) they were asking people if they were American Citizens and if they weren't they were asking for passports. When I asked the flight attendant why they were doing that, he responded because Illegal Immigrants were getting into the US by plane . So just be careful, the Puerto Rican government can get shady sometimes. |
