What is best and cheap mode of local travel in San Juan, Puerto Rico ?

Travel Info
I will be there in Mid June. Are buses available between some of the important hotels in San juan?

Travel Tips
You can take buses and you can walk. If you are into walking it is a terrific way to get around and then combine it with buses as well as the trolley in old San Juan. It's a long walk from most places into old San Juan but Miramar, Condado, Santurce, even parts of Isla Verde, are all accessible on foot. Buses are fine but be prepared for very full buses during rush hour as well as the non-existence of punctuality.

Another way to get around are "Publicos." These are cars or vans that shuttle multiple passengers around from point A to point B. For example, you can take a publico from Rio Piedras (take the bus to the plaza) and from there ask where the publicos to Fajardo or Luquillo are located. It is a very, very inexpensive way to get around to the rest of the island. Go early in the day - remember to ask the driver what the latest return time is and don't miss it. BTW both are awesome destinations, particularly for a beach adventure at Luquillo beach -not to be missed. Get fried fish, bacalaitos, empanandas, alcapurrias..... that is if you are into fried foods.

Another inexpensive day trip is to take a publico from Rio Piedras to the Vieques (or Culebras) ferry in Fajardo and spend the day at the beach there. Magnificent public beaches. Fried fish and arepas.

Don't forget the fruit! Lots of street vendors and the main farmers market in Rio Piedras (Plaza del mercado.) Quenepas (in season) mangos, guavas, pineapple...

Also try mofongo! And of course arroz con pollo y habichuelas. You can also get excellent Cuban cuisine in San Juan because of the large Cuban population, (Congri con yuca.)

Or forget about San Juan and stay in a "Parador" somewhere in the interior of the island - or plan to do so the next time around.

I LOVE vacationing in Puerto Rico! Especially getting out of San Juan but that's pretty neat too. Depends what you are into.

Enjoy!

Yeap. I live here and we have a bus system here but it takes a lot of time trying to taking them. So, I recommend you to rent a car, is the best way to move around the turistic areas and the whole island. I'll bet you want to check out most of the beaches here and believe me, they are not in the San Juan turistic area, most of them are in the south and northwest area. Enjoy and Have a GREAT VACATIONS HERE!
I would suggest trying a hotel package that includes tours to the major "must-sees" or renting a car and getting as detailed a map as possible. Our bus system is not reliable-buses will be up to 1 hour late, and they are not available at all after 10:00 pm, which is a big drawback if you want to get a taste of Puertorrican nightlife. (I wouldn't suggest walking long distances by yourself at night in San Juan, though, especially if you don't know your way around.) Rental car rates are the same as in the States, so it's not hideously expensive, and gas prices are lower than in the States, too. (It's sold by the liter instead of the gallon, but it still comes out less.)
