Could you recommend places to see all over Puerto Rico? |
Travel Info I am going to Puerto Rico for 8 days in July. Could you recommend places to go all over the island? I am interested both in the typical tourist sites but also would like to see the kind of Puerto Rico that only locals get to see. I鈥檓 not afraid of dirt and I don鈥檛 care for luxuries鈥? Other Travel Tips Hello friend. For the best beaches, you need to go to the north-west of the island. Search for towns like Aguadilla, Isabela and Rinc贸n, specially if you like surfing. Also, there are the small islands of Vieques and Culebra to the east of the Island. In Culebra you will find Flamingo Beach, one of the best in the world! For nature lovers, there is El Yunque(east), the only rain forest in the U.S. Then there is "Cuevas de Camuy", which means caves of the town of Camuy, There you will find one of the biggest underground rivers known to man. But there you will find much more. Try a search on the net to find professional tours(recommended!).(Sound of bats in the caves where recorded for the move Batman Begins) Now, for the nights, start of with Old San Juan, the oldest colonial city in the Caribbean( go there in the day as well, many shops and the city is great). Many pubs and lounges. Also, areas like el Condado and Isla Verde, where you will probably be staying are filled with nightspots. I recommend that you make a good search in the net anyways and have fun. Sightseeing in Old San Juan - El Morro Fort, San Cristobal Fort, The Cathedral, Las Americas Museum, walk through the street in Old San Juan. Eat at Manolins, El Jibarito, Raices, Tio Danny , or just go to a tipical car an ask for Bacalaitos or Alcapurria (you could find this also at Pi脩ones are, near the beach , nice place and cheaper) and Luquillo Beach. Arecibo - Go to Camuy Caverns and also Camuy Observatory (have you seen Contact with Jodie Foster, well this is it) Mall - Go to Plaza Las Americas , Belts Oulet. Ponce - Visit Serralles Castle, Via Crucis, go the center of the town visit the Cathedral, Old Firefigther station, Armstrong - Poventud home in front of the Plaza, Ponce Art Museum. Don't buy anything in Old San Juan on the weekend. Go and walk around, see what you like and then go back on a Wed and it's 1/2 price. Locals increase and often double prices on the weekends because of all of the tourists. Luquillo is a very nice beach at the foot of El Yunque. Manatee Beach is also very interesting. The rocks come around and form a horseshoe shape and the ocean enters thru the center, it's very beautiful. Somewhere near Ponce there are illuminated microscopic animals in the water, so at night they seem to glow. You can take a boat ride and see them There is also a highway that goes from San Juan to Ponce, it saves you a lot of time, but to see the local areas of PR, try taking a back road thru Barranquitas (sp?) and Toro Negro, it takes you thru the highest points on the island and the views are incredible. If you have a car you can go anywhere in Puerto Rico! I would recommend driving the coast and letting the day decide where you spend the night. People suggested some great places... I would also go to San German where they have one the oldest churches on the island, and it has cool stories of underground tunnels. Louisa, is very rich in African history, lots of great music! Aguadilla, a treasure I discovered not to long ago...Lots of great beaches and surfing...if you go eat at Mr. Mofongos...loved it! Lares, is rich in history as well... it's where Albizu Campos faught and died...(look him up) It all depends on what u like to do... I love the sunset at Boqueron...along with its seafood. San Lorenzo and Ciales is home, if you want country....San Lorenzo is a place to visit....not to mention the home of Chayanne LOL Be carefull like anywhere people try to take advantage of tourist and dont be gullable thinking that nothing can happen to you at 1 in the morning as you stroll through the streets of place where you know no one! LOL I'm keeping it real... Do some reasearch...balance what you enjoy as ask people you know...while you are there try the helados...and snow cones, pinchos, alcapurrias and bacalitos...UMMMMM Use your best judgement and have fun! San Juan is great, but overrated and too crowded. If you are coming in the summer, your best bet is to visit the inner island - it's less tourists too. Come to Camuy and see the Caves, the Arecibo Telescope, sunsets in Rincon, The Bioluminescent Bay in Vieques (a must see), Crashboat in Aquadilla, El Yunque (the rainforest, also a must see), Pretty much everywhere has some sort of attraction here.
