Why was Porto Rico the old name for Puerto Rico? It looks like Portuguese, but they never owned it? |
Travel Info I have searched for this information, and all I can find out is that Porto Rico (which is what most people seem to call it) is the archaic name for Puerto Rico. Travel Tips Actually Trish is correct about the name Porto Rico being Archaic. But the archaic name did not come from the indigineous Taino indians. They named it Boriken & the spanish spelled that Boriquen. Then the spanish came & named it Puerto Rico, but I believe at this time, so long ago, people used archaism, just becuase of the time period it was spelled Porto Rico. Later when archaism became rare it was changed to be spelled the correct spanish way, Puerto Rico. Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/archaism... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/puerto_rico... Other Travel Tips That's all it is, an archaic difference. The Spaniards first discovered it, the Portuguese were too busy down in Brazil, which they spell Brasil........ Maybe we should start calling Port Wine .....Puerto? Well Puerto Rico was called Boriken by the Taino Indians before been "Discovered'"... Then Puerto Rico was called San Juan Bautista when the Spaniards arrived...Because they were saved and had Found Land.. Later on the Bautista was drop ans San Juan was used and still is the Capital of Puerto Rico. research it at www.PuertoricoWOW.com www.wepa.com While all those previos answers are close, this is what really happened. The first indigenous settlers in Puerto Rico were Archaic, the archaic language used Porto Rico in the naming of the island. When Christopher Columbus arrived he and his men renamed the island San Juan Bautista. When the Spaniard moved in some years later, they gave the old name of "Porto Rico" back, because it was spanish. Instead of using the old Archaic spelling, they used spanish language to name the island again, using Puerto Rico instead. My brain 鈾? Porto Rico was a name given by americans who tried to colonized Puerto Rico by force in 1898. they were not able to write or pronounce the real name which is Puerto Rico. During the opressive american colonial regime 1898-1951 there was a period were the name was changed to Porto Rico, this was changed by Puertorricans when they took control of their own government in 1952 and the constitutuon of the country was established restoring the dignity and the name of their country. |
