Puerto Rico trip advice?

Travel Info
I am traveling to Puerto Rico on June 16 with my husband and three teen/pre-teen kids. We are staying in Humacao. Does anyone have any trip advice? We will have a rental car and mapquest says that it is about a 45 min drive to San Juan. Do you know if this is an easy drive for tourists? The kids are excited to see the forts. They also want to see the rain forest. Are there any warnings that I should know about? Is it a kid friendly atmosphere? Thanks!!!

Travel Tips
Hi, I went to PR last year with my wife and two pre-teen kids and we had a blast! The key is to plan ahead. Driving on main roads is very easy as most of them are well identified. People are very frinedly and helpful. Several times we took the wrong turn but we always found someone that could help however, like any other place in the US, be always alert about your sorroundings. Wear light clothes with tennis shoes as the temperature and humidity can hit you pretty fast. The following places are great to visit:
* Old San Juan - walk in the old town, visit the galleries and go to el Morro Castle. For a nice dinner try the Spanish Fly Restaurant or The Hard Rock Cafe.
* El Yunque Rainforest - Great hike! Take a backpack and put some iced water bottles!
* Beach - there several great beaches around the island but if you are in EL Yunque, you may want to stop at Luquillo Beach.
* Arecibo Observatory - This is an impresive structure.
* Camuy Caverns - guided tour to the insides of a cavern system. Kids will love it.
* Boqueron bioluminescence bay - you probably want to stay in the area as the bay is better appreciated at night.

The above activities will probably take you 3 full days.

Enjoy your trip!

Im from PR and I would say you are going to love it,, but I would definitley say you need to be careful,, the locals really target the tourist if you aren't familiar with the places... If you aren't on a tourist route then you need to make sure you don't look like you are not from there... its easy to drive around since the main highway goes all the way around the island,,, there are toll booths so be prepared. The forts are the best, but try and get out and sample the authentic foods. When you go to the beach, just make sure you can see your car and don't keep anything in there you don't want stolen... have fun!
Look up the Bioluminescent Bay in the Northeast portion of Puerto Rico. This is a must-see, especially for kids. It's one of about 3 places in the world where you can swim in a lake at night, and the water will glow when you move in it!

El Yunque rainforest is also a great to-do. Find a tour that takes longer than an hour though.

San Juan seemed pretty safe to me when I was there. Just use common sense and go where other people are.

OK, that guy is making Puerto Rico look bad... I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and never had any problems. The beaches in the south are wonderful!!! your teens wont get bored because there's so much to see. I'm going there myself this tuesday to visit my family...
