Mayaguez, Puerto Rico? |
Travel Info I'm going to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in March. Can anyone tell me about Mayaguez, what there is to do, etc? I've been to the websites, but I would like a local's perspective or someone who has been there. Thanks!! Travel Tips I lived in Mayaguez from 1982 to 1990. I attended college there at the University of PR and then stayed a few more years after graduation. Mayaguez is a nice town, not as crowded as San Juan so in my opinion it is a much better place to live and visit. Mayaguez itself is not much of a tourist town, however it is an excellent "base camp" to explore the south and west coast of Puerto Rico. You definitely want to visit: 1.The beaches in Cabo Rojo (Combate, Joyuda, Boqueron). 2. The fishing village of La Pargurea in Lajas, where you can take a boat ride to visit the mangroves, or Isla Mata La Gata, or go at night to see the bio-luminescent bay. It has been a few years since I've been there but La Casita Restaurant has excellent seafood as well as Puerto Rican food. 3. You can go to Guanica and visit the Dry Forest and the coastline near the Copamarina hotel. You can also take a short boat ride to "Gilligan's Island" and have a picnic there. 4. From Mayaguez it is about a one hour drive to Ponce, which has the old Fire Station (And do not forget to visit King's Ice Cream across the street from the old fire station!). In Ponce you may also visit "La Cruceta del Vigia" which overlooks the city, the Tibes Ceremonial Park built by the Taino Indians and Hacienda Buena Vista, which is an old coffee plantation that has been restored as a museum. 5. Before you get to Ponce from Mayaguez you pass through the town of Yauco. There you will find La Guardarraya Restaurant where they serve huge portions of pork chops along with excellent Puerto Rican food. 6. North of Mayaguez there is the town of Rincon, which has excellent beaches and restaurants. I Love Mayaguez! If I ever move back to Puerto Rico, that is where I want to live. Antes, Ahora y Siempre, COLEGIO! Have fun! Others quite and boring but I like Hum's answer. I'ts not as fun or vibrant as San Juan, but you could still enjoy a couple of things. I grew up there and I have to say...it is one of the most boring towns to visit in my opinion. Most of the students that go to the University of Puerto Rico hang out in towns like Aguada, Rincon and San German. If you want to know where to party go to the University in Mayaguez Campus and ask any student there. Good luck! |
